I started changing all pots into clear ones. That helps soooo much. And i mix my own chunky soil and so far, any plant in my home is very happy :)

I'll admit I typically use the same soil for everything, but my plants were happier once I started making a "well draining" mix with a healthy amount of perlite and some gravel in it.

There’s one big problem with potting mixes - most seem to contain fungus gnat eggs. I used to get fungus gnats every time after repotting my plants! Now I make sure to soak a generous heap of mosquito bits in a bucket of water (30-40 minutes is enough). Then I remove the bits with a sieve, pour the potting mix into the bucket and let it soak for a few hours. I remove the soil from water using a large sieve and make sure to squeeze out excess water. Then I mix it with perlite, and it’s ready to be used. It’s a very messy process but it’s so much easier to prevent fungus gnats than to deal with a full-blown infestation.

Generally, the more perlite, the better, is what I’ve settled on this year in my plant journey. You can always water more in the summer but you can’t take water out in the winter when the plants grow slower. Also, clear plastic pots that fit in decorative pots so you can keep an eye on the moisture and root health.

I used to just focus on watering. I had a ZZ plant that only had 1 big stalk and a couple of small stalks for two years. I put a Sansi light on it and had it resoiled with an airy mix and in about a year it grew like six additional stalks and they're all big now. Bro was like finally some nutrients.

I am in the process of repotting all of my plants into my own chunky mix. I purchased pine bark, coco chips, coco coir, large perlite, large pumice, biochar, vermiculite, and coarse sand. A little over-kill im sure lol but my plants will be happy. 😂

For anyone who feels overwhelmed try and see if your local plant store has a dirt bar!! Just swing by before your repot and you can even talk to the workers about recommendations!

I struggled for years with Alocasias. When I wanted to repot the last living (but also struggling) one I went to my local (specialized) plant shop and asked for soil for alocasias. She was out of pre mixed (syba)soil but made a mix on the spot for me. I also used a self watering pot for the repotting.

My alocasia grew 6 new leaves over the summer... Before it was only slowly losing leaves and barely growing back new ones.

I even had some soil left and used it for other (similar) plants and they're thriving as well.
