  Thrift stores really lost appeal when you walk in and everyone has their phone out, price checking everything.

  Where I live its cheaper to go to Walmart&apos;s clearance rack than it is the thrift store. It makes me frustrated with the local thrift stores and sad at the same time.

  Mom volunteered at the local church thrift store decades ago and another volunteer&apos;s husband had an antique shop and she picked over all the donations for that store. Bad actors are nothin new.

  As somebody who grew up poor, thrift stores were essential for survival. I do love that thrifting being trendy has taken the shame out of wearing secondhand clothes for many people. But it&apos;s sad seeing the surge in prices and the corporate greed pushing out thrifting as a viable option for low income people.

It&apos;s kind of the quintessential predatory thrift store. When I worked there out of desperation a few years back, they made that incredibly clear, from store management to company policy. Each state has its own subsidiary under the overall Goodwill brand, so some are better than others, but overall they do not actually care about poverty or providing &quot;community service&quot;. They just want free stuff, easy money, and state-supplied indentured servitude. If they can cater to the rich and still sell, they will toss out the poors in a heartbeat.

  I want to address one thing you mentioned - they often pay far less then minimum wage. &nbsp;Both Value Village and Goodwill use Sheltered Workshop programs, &nbsp;where disabled people can (legally) be paid far less then minimum wage - in some cases, as little as 20 cents an hour, for repetitive, often physically demanding, labour. &nbsp;<br><br>Then they turn around and talk about supporting the Disabled Community by offering employment.

  Goodwill has a list of brand names they flag and pull to put on thier online marketplace. &nbsp;So the chance of finding treasure on the hunt is fewer and far between. &nbsp;This is why I now donate all my clothing items directly to a homeless shelter which in turn gives the items to people in need.
