I moved to VN from the Bay Area 6 years ago, here’s the thing, in Vietnam you can live for $500 to $5000/month. Healthcare is cheap, emergency room visit is less than $200. Apt can be $200 or $2000. What I love about VN is no stress living, and you don’t need to be a millionaire to be living like one here.

The take home message here is : live in VN for 6 months and you will see if it fits you or not. There is everything for everyone depending on what are your means and priorities.
But wherever you choose to live, you have to adapt to this country, not the other way around.

This woman is living the Western life in Vietnam, so of course, she is going to pay more. You can live comfortably for 50% of what she is quoting. A 1 bedroom can be USD 500, and not USD 1000. but if you want to pay more, that's definitely available. Nothing wrong with street food. Western food is expensive because they can charge foreigners that price and they won't bat an eye. Like Mexican food, the type that would be considered street food in the west is expensive, but for no other reason than it has cheese, and is owned by Westerners. Even McDonald's is expensive comparibly, but not because it is more quality food. Same goes with all fast food chains from the US. Nothing wrong with a banh mi for $1.50 USD. She is right about the work culture. Workers get paid so little, they don't really care if they lose their job or not. They can just move back with family. In the Us where everyone is living on loans and mortgages, the fear of losing one's job forces you to put up with more on job pressure in order to pay yur mortgage, car loan, and insurance.

I retired at 56 when I have felt that I have enough is enough to live the rest of my life, even I am not rich. I never have felt like my mind goes criple without works, my mind feels free, no stress, pressure, no mandatory demand... I am reading book, playing sports, traveling a bit, and continuing with little investment, keeping myself busy with home maintenance, garden.....

Just so everyone knows. I'm retired and living in Vietnam and I live comfortably and have a social life. I only spend $1k usd per month, even though my income is more than this.

She’s too high standards to comment for regular peeps that retires in Vietnam. I’m going to retire next year in 2026 in Da Nang where I was born. 1k usd is good living expenses for me. My budget can go up to $5000/m but I’m a simple person. I don’t need all the frills
But I love it when you reiterated “higher standard living” because she keeps saying it’s regular for her. 👍

I do love watching videos of different people's perspective on retiring out in Vietnam. I still have a ways to go before that happens and a lot can change during that time.
