  My solution is Boss Katana on 0.5watts set on Brown sound with guitar volume about half way up. If the sound is less than inspiring I drink one or two glasses of red wine. This helps me get to the edge of breakup — with my wife 😅

  Effectively, the 1st OD becomes the "amp" on the edge of breakup.

  Unity light gain stacking is basically re inventing the cascading high gain amp, but much more personalized, with 2^N channels, so long as you dial it in.    Which is a good thing.   When all the stages are still outputting in the "interesting zone" of the next stage, the volume knob and pick attack retain a lot of control through the stages.   Hence, great cleanup along with tight (or whatever you sculpt to) high gain.

  I do the same thing with a Boss Blues Driver, using that as the always on. However, I use it at the end of my chain (just before my buffer) and treat it as a part of the amp, into which I stack other drives.

  My favorite setup in front of my Fender amp is a DOD 250 preamp pedal followed by a Timmy clone pedal. I use the same method to dial both of them in. Thank you for sharing this, I feel like this is one of those gold nuggets that not many really share or talk about.
