I had exactly this problem on a violin that I set up, and I almost gave up before I realized what the reason was - the shape of the track in the upper nut! It was easy to fix once I figured it out. That was like three weeks ago.

My G string has had a very odd metallic “twang” when I play the open string. I could literally hear it next to my ear, so I knew it was something near the nut, but thanks to you, I think I understand the science behind this and will get it adjusted asap. Thank you for giving us this knowledge!

I replaced the nut on my super cheap violin (and the soundpost and the bridge). It does sound much, much better than when got it. Thanks for making these helpful videos.
