How Negative Edge Creates Unique Characters

So fun fact, mobile app buttons almost exclusively use negative edge to trigger (called "touchUpInside" on iOS, not sure for Android). The button triggers when you lift your finger. There is actually a second type of negative edge on Mobile: "touchUpOutside". This is when you move your finger off the button before lifting it. This cancels the button's action and it does not trigger. You do this all the time without thinking about it.
So negative edge actually has more "depth" on a touch screen. You could have a a brain breaking puppet character that controls two puppets that depend on whether you lift up your finger first or slide your finger off the button before lifting.

Neg edge is one of those things that's intimidating when you first learn your first character who uses it, and then it clicks and you wonder why everyone can't have a neg edge tool. It's just so fun to manage.

Missing out on the most evil negative edge user to ever exist in fighting games:

Zero.

I really glad you talked about Juri. While I’ve never been the biggest fan of her as a character, I loved the negative edge fuha of 4 and it made her feel really unique for an SF character. And then in 5 and 6 they got rid of negative edge for her altogether and now she’s a stock character and she just feels like such a different character. Especially in 6, to me at least.

Boxer in ST is some of the most vile rushdown I've seen in any game.

Another thing about Boxer in ST is that you can still do kick-rushpunches while holding the kickbuttons down, by doing the motion and then releasing one of the three kick buttons(this loses the charge for TAP however). This means he can surprise opponents that are not expecting a kick-rushpunch, because they are expecting him to be charging TAP.

I really love how technical juri is in cross tekken, and SFV revealing that they were making her a resource character made me sad because I knew there wouldn't be another character like her. Here's hoping for SF6 making a new character that's like this in some way!

Shout outs to Zero's Buster from UMVC3 having basically having the combined upsides of all 3 of these examples.
- It's a projectile like Juri's Fuhajin
- Ties his whole kit together like Turn-Around Punch because you can cancel all his other specials into level 3 buster for some reason
- You can switch which button your holding and keep the charge like Zonk Knuckle (and even has a glitch that lets you use a special for a button your holding down while charging)
And then on top of that it also TODs people with meter via the famous Lightning Loops. Honestly I struggle to think of a stronger negative edge input move in any fighting game.

I wanna give a shout to +R Justice, who has negative edge projectiles attached to each of her buttons that all arch differently and explode on release.

Simply my favorite move of all time because it warps almost every neutral interaction based on which buttons actively have bombs out. Nothing has felt as weird on my hands as trying to do anything with two or more bombs out.

I know it was Street Fighter only but I wish you touched on Makoto from Blazblue. Literally the character that made me realize negative edge could be used in much more interesting ways. I mean, TAP is cool and it's crazy that the game would let you charge a move that long and be rewarded but it was so fun to use Makoto and actually have to time exactly how long I hold a button and still do it fast enough to combo correctly.
