  He’s one of those super-duper well-known painters, and yet it was so sad to learn about the whole course of his life, not just as an artist but as a human being. It always hits me deeply when I see painters’ very last portraits.

  &quot;Jacob wrestling with an Angel&quot; appears as a seminal work in Gauguin&apos;s oeuvre precisely because he uses an new and &apos;un natural &apos; background colour in order to portray &nbsp;a different dimension from the natural world - not the mundane, but the arcane - the spiritual landscape of the angel! <br>Look at some of the vitrage in Chartres cathedral ( 12th. century) - arcane scenes there WITH RED BACKGROUNDS.

  The simple critique of Gauguin is that he was living a fantasy.<br>But… it inspired great work, fantasy or not.<br>The painting “Matamoe” with the peacock is my favorite. I’d love to see it in Moscow.<br>Some things he did were over-the-line.<br>But he also advocated for the islander’s rights.<br>He was an artist.<br>He was a confusing guy.

  The story all brushed up… first of all-he was painting while working successfully in financial field.<br>But he desperately want to be an artist, and a famous one, who makes MONEY from art. <br>Definitely- he had a great talent! And he went to the islands-because he was not able to make living not for his family or himself in France. And to get recognised, to make some money for living.
