He is the last classic painter and the first modern painter. Front runner of impressionist, realism and social painting, expressionism and even surrealism. The roots of all these can be found in his works. What I miss in this excellent documentary is more detail about the intellectual movements of his time and the impact of the dramatic historical events. Not just the French invasion but the complete disintegration of the Spanish empire which had a profound psychological impact at the time.

The last summary is accurate. Thank god for sending Goya to the world and making him live long.

Goya is to the history of painting and sarcastic representations of reality what Beethoven is to the history of music. Deaf, depressive and intense, they respectively surpassed all the limits imposed by the pictorial and musical tradition of their times. They are genius and unique, brutally ironic. It is possible to love or hate Goya and Beethoven, but it is impossible to ignore the works of both.

Probably your best documentary. The best descriptive, well suited background music not too loud or over powering. i watched it twice.

Goya is the GOAT painter, combing pure talent, skill, beauty, creativity, variety, surreal weirdness, and innovation. Go to Madrid and check it out.
