My grandma had a Delacroix painting of a bull fight that she had for many, many years, and my dad and his sister couldn't come to terms on who got the painting, so they said the fair thing to do was to sell it and split the money, which sold for 276,00, which they weren't even remotely close to being aware of getting that amount of money for it. My immediate family lived very well growing up because I was fairly young when my grandma passed, and my dad did right with his half, which kept the family going all because of that one painting.

Romanticism broke with an artistic school that had become obsolete and stagnant. But after a few decades the innovative movement also aged and intoxicated Europe and the world. When artistic rebelliousness becomes a well-established and profitable tradition it is ready to be buried. But curiously, the passage of time revives a genuine interest in what has become outdated. Aesthetic inconstancy and reverence for history are qualities as human as the habit of accumulating ordinary and artistic objects. Liberty Leading the People, by Eugène Delacroix, is one of those paintings that mark both the history of French art and world history. It's repeated over and over on the Internet and I wouldn't be surprised if someone proves that it's been stored like a gem in millions and millions of smartphones. I never get tired of seeing this image and frankly sometimes I forget the name of the painter. When the work takes on a life of its own, it becomes paradoxically more important than who produced it. Would Delacroix like that statement?

This lesson ( I think of all of your posts as a classroom lesson) totally blew my mind! &nbsp;I knew nothing about him, or the history behind him... Thank you!!! I&apos;ve seen the paintings, and I probably heard his name so many times in this many decades I&apos;ve been on this planet... But believe me, this is one time that I will remember! Thank you for the lesson!<br>PS: please forgive me for the grammatical errors...

I had always walked past his pajntings really fast when in Museums. Too overwhelming, so much violence. However, this film has now goven me more insights to reconsider and appreciate his work more. Thanks a lot.

He was greatly influenced by his older friend Géricault, who did great romantic and equestrian works before his early death at age 36. &nbsp;Had he lived longer, he would have been better known. &nbsp; He did the Charging Chasseur, and the Raft of the Medusa, both in the Louvre.
