Analyzing Ted & Robin (+ The Ending)

For me, the fact that they were PLANNED to end up together has always been puzzling because for so long it seems like the writers had completely abandoned the idea of them as a couple. When they bring it up in season 7 it feels so unnatural and weird and it just makes me so upset because they literally KNEW that was the ending they wanted yet did nothing for seasons to build up to it

The worst part about the ending is it ignores the character development over the seasons. The entire last season (and a bit preceding it) essentially shows why barney and robin are perfect for each other as well as why Robin and Ted aren't. Tracy being so loveable and "perfect" only add fuel to that fire. How wonderful would it be to see people growing up on TV and not going back to the original couple? To mirror reality of loving people within a certain time in your life and then moving on to other partners.

I always felt that their chemistry as a romantic couple was off. I wasn’t convinced that they were a couple or at the very least that Robin loved him romantically.

I think Robin loved him as a friend, but romantically she saw him as a fallback option. Ted approached romance and relationships with this aggressive and twisted representation of unonditional love. Since Robin craved unconditional love more than anything, I believe she became confused to what he was actually offering her vs what she was really feeling. When someone knocks on your door with a promise of epic love after a childhood of emotional neglect, it's easy to get lost in that and become confused. Hence all the ping ponging

For me the reason the ending didn't work is because i never brought that robin loved ted. I saw it as robin viewed ted as an safety net.

Not me just realising that Ted spends nearly 30 years obsessing over the first woman he sees after his "OK, I'm ready, where is she?" declaration. Perfectly normal, well-adjusted human being behaviour.

It made Tracy feel like a rebound girl or consolation prize for Ted rather than the love of his life. I was okay with her dying, and even the idea of old Ted eventually moving on, but diving back into Robin's arms and only speaking about his experiences with Robin prior to her death makes Tracy feel like a placeholder and baby factory until Robin was available again.

P.S. DVD alternate ending FTW!

To me, Robin fixating on the locket makes sense because she is freaking out about getting married to Barney and feels like it's this big risk, so she's looking for the locket as either as reassurance that she's making the right decision or as confirmation that her fears are founded and she should bail. It's something that, if she was feeling comfortable in her decision, she would place absolutely no weight on, but when she's feeling so unsure she's grasping for something concrete to anchor herself to, and treating the locket almost like a coin flip to push her one way or the other. The fact that she's not usually the kind of person to put stock into "signs" really works to accentuate how fragile she is in this moment imo

The worst thing about the locket situation is that she doesn't even express to Barney how important it is to her. She didn't even give him a chance to "prove" his love and dedication. Barney is shown throughout the show to put 1000% of effort into something when he cares about someone. It's ludicrous for her to have all these vulnerable conversations with Ted about the locket and how much it means to her and then extrapolate from that that it's a sign she and Barney are doomed or something. It makes me feel insane. Like girl it's a self-fulfilling prophecy at this point. Talk to your fiance!! You know Barney would put in the effort to make you happy. You just never gave him a chance to!

Their chemistry as friends is impeccable. Had the writers had done their work properly by no taking the cheapest road possible by forcing Ted’s obsession/limerence over Robin to loom over each and every of their interaction past season 6, these two will have been the perfect representation on television of how some people are way better off as friends than romantic partners and can bring so much joy anx comfort into each other’s life through such a priceless vector.

Real friendship is so underrated and underused when put in competition with overdramatizing forced romantic pairings, and chemistry between a man and a woman is too often wrongly associated with romantic feelings involved in the mix which is infuriated to watch. In the end, it just spoils everything and with such a gem like the beautiful friendship Ted and Robin share effortlessly, HIMYM’s writers made no exception in spoiling it to no end... until the very end, which in my opinion is the real tragedy of their relationship.

I think Robin’s speech is backed up by the narrative quite well.
Ted doesn’t want to move to New Jersey, he’s not ready for a kid and he’s been shown not to know a lot of stuff about Stella in the first place.
He’s rushing into something because he feels left behind, and he’s ignoring all the red flags in the process.
The fact that his wedding was originally meant to be for Stella’s sister is pretty indicative and symbolic. He’s literally disappearing into what was, until a second prior, someone else’s wedding.

The idea of Ted loving dogs despite the actor being allergic is hilarious, but cruel, irony from the writers part
