are modest brands a scam?

This is exactly why I am learning to sew and will create my own clothing and start my own business Insha'Allah. It's so hard to find genuinely modest khimars and abayas that are not just websites reselling from SHEIN 😓

Hi! I hope you don’t take this the wrong way, because I do understand the concern around giving credit where it’s due. But as someone who studied fashion and fashion marketing, I think there’s a bigger industry context here that some of these videos are missing.

It’s easy to point fingers when we’re looking specifically at modest brands, because that’s the niche we’re familiar with. But taking inspiration from existing designs, silhouettes, details, textiles, embroidery, and broader fashion trends, and then adapting those ideas for a different customer or market, is an extremely normal part of the fashion industry. Fashion has always built upon, referenced, and reinterpreted what already exists. Not every brand is expected to reinvent clothing from scratch with every collection.

For example, taking inspiration from a high-end dress and adapting the concept into something that works for women who dress modestly can actually serve a real purpose. There are so many women who love certain aesthetics or trends but simply cannot wear the original design because it doesn’t align with how they choose to dress. Making a version with sleeves, more coverage, or a different silhouette is not inherently a bad thing. Similarly, being inspired by an embroidery motif or design detail and translating it into a different garment is a common part of fashion design.

Of course, there is a difference between inspiration and directly copying something, and I do think brands can do better at being transparent about their references or inspirations when appropriate. But I also think the way these situations are sometimes presented can feel more judgmental than analytical. When you study the industry beyond just the modest-fashion space, you realize that this kind of reinterpretation happens constantly, at every level of fashion, all over the world.

I’m not saying modest brands should be immune from criticism. I just think it’s important to approach these conversations with an understanding of how the industry actually functions before framing every instance of inspiration or adaptation as something scandalous. Sometimes a design is simply being translated for a different audience with different needs, and I don’t think there’s anything inherently wrong with that.

I made my own abaya for Ramadan and plan on making more because paying that much for polyester is insane. It's such an easy seeing project too for a simple style of one.

i disagree with veiled. i've bought from them in the past and the quality is almost never worth the price. honestly a quick look at their website supports this idea because many (ofc not all!) of the dresses are mostly polyester and over $100. literally one of the ones i was looking at today was $100 on SALE and 95% polyester which is absolutely ridiculous

NEVER buy Bazar Al Haya. I bought an abaya from them that came ripped. I took a photo the day it arrived & sent it to them asking for a refund.

They accused ME of lying & the best they could do was offer $10 store credit.

That website is awful.

Never seen your videos but I've always really admired modest fashion and the creativity it sparks in people like you. As a non-Muslim man I'm glad to have found a channel where I can engage with this interest respectfully, thank you very much <3

Gonna have to disagree about veiled. They charge ridiculous prices for rubbish materials. I would understand if it was an item that requires the properties of polyester but their items are so basic. Also their sustainability and beyond trends section is literally just word salad. There’s no actual transparency there which if they were truly sustainable and ethical they would have more information. I agree with everything else though. I’m really tired of every modest brand selling the same thing. None of these brands have any personality or draw me into buying from them. Especially as someone who doesn’t like the basic aesthetic all these brands go for you can’t find anything.

I have so many years of research and knowledge about the fashion industry (manufacturing specifically), but I'm not a content creator so it all just sits with me 😅 I'm truly so grateful more sisters are waking up and communicating how exploitive these companies are and just how bad the modest fashion space is. My only advice for sisters is to NEVER pay more than $100 for polyester - polyester is plastic and the most cheap material you can find. No one can justify polyester costing this much. Instead, opt for cotton, linen, wool, and viscose (ecovero). Pay more for these items if you have to because they cost a lot to make and are so much better for you, your health, and the environment.
