  Being a teenager who can actually read and think for themselves in a school that doesn&apos;t want us to succeed is suffocating. &nbsp;No Child Left Behind killed the education system and turned it into absolute chaos.

  My dad (mid-50s) was never taught phonics as a kid because his parents were traveling preachers and to this very day it affects his ability to spell. He&apos;s a very intelligent man but that was a missing core building block of his developmental education. To not allow teachers to teach is like we&apos;re ripping pages straight from Fahrenheit 451. Knowledge is an extremely powerful tool, and banning it is both poetic and deeply disturbing. I&apos;m terrified for these children.

  I can just imagine the higher-ups coming in and being like <br>“hey, so we noticed that your students have been testing really well on reading” <br><br>and the teacher being like “I’m glad you brought this up! Yeah, I’ve actually been teaching them using the older methods that were used just a few years ago, and it’s really helping them grasp the concepts better and understand sentences and paragraphs more deeply. I was thinking of bringing this up to the board so that maybe we could-“ <br><br>“you’re fired”. <br><br>“What?” <br><br>“Yeah, so the kids aren’t supposed to be able to read. You’re fired”

  We are living in the prequel to Fahrenheit 451. This is how it starts. Not governments banning books but a wave of people who can&apos;t read, feel bad they can&apos;t read, and then they get rid of reading altogether.

  As a nurse, the abolition of phonics horrifies me. There are so many look alike/sound alike medications that do different things and it’s crazy to think that the next generation might give me lorazepam instead of loratadine because it starts with the same 4 letters
