Why can’t we all go back to times where most teens wrote long ass fanfics about their niche interests 💔

I missed the times when teachers said "don't just look it up on wikipedia" instead of "don't use chatGPT"

We use decimals everyday; when you go shopping, you use them to figure out how much you save on a sale😂

When I was a teenager, I used to get annoyed about equations and so on because I didn't think I would use them in my daily life. But now that I'm in my 30s, I recognize that all the "useless" stuff we learned in school wasn't learned necessarily because teachers thought most of us would use it in the future, but because struggling out difficult problems and writing long essays were all important in building critical thought and strengthening our brains to help figure out difficult problems that we would eventually have. The entire point is to learn how to do difficult things and think through problems.

I had a lot of trouble in school, with math and reading, I would constantly have "breakdowns" about not being able to understand my math homework. You know what my engineer dad did? He let me calm down, take a break, and then we tried again! And he worked full time as well as my mom, but he would still sit with me at the dining table and help me with my homework. Parents these days are just lazy!

Coming from someone who loved reading as a kid and was well above my grade level in primary school, and who has a crushing fear of a mediocre life... The argument 'you'll never need this in real life' is SO STUPID and honestly kind of sad. Do y'all really want your children to know the bare minimum??? That's just... so sad. And reading is the bare minimum anyway. Younger Gen Z, when we have kids we need to do better.

I was stocking shelves at my job and i was standing near the book section and theres this girl there with her mom probably no older than 12 or 13 and all of a sudden i hear her say "I wish i knew how to read id get a book" and i was shook. I couldn't believe it i honestly thought kids not knowing how to read might have been an exaggerated topic..no child should not be able to read wtf is going on with parents and schools anymore?

I feel like it's a rite of passage to sit at the table with a parent or guardian trying to do math and trying not to scream at each other

The scariest part to me is when I genuinely struggled with some of these things (like writing an essay in an hour) and I felt bad. And then I remembered that I'm legitimately disabled and that's why I struggled, while most of these kids are probably neurotypical and have no damn excuse.

The reason that's the scariest part?

My disability allowed me to get a lot of help and a lot of leniency because I could not help it. I was given extra time and a bit of extra guidance. And that allowed me to pass.
Another me? Will fe completely overlooked, won't get the help they need, will be shamed. Because if everyone acts like they can't do things, the ones who really can't won't get help.
