I have made 0.010" shafts before from large starting diameter, in 6061. The plastic is a different beast. I may need to water or air chill it.

I need an ultem part created with 1mm shaft and several 2mm grooves cut into it at one end (i.e. 1mm to 2mm to 1mm and back to 2mm to complete. What are my chances. Had one failed attempt, starting with large diameter ultem rod. too much heat was generated. Now have some new, super sharp mini grooging tools. I'm think with lower RPM and feed to keep heat down (don't want to introduce fluid) it will work. What do you think?

Thanks Joe. I just used this method turning two odd diameter nickel silver pins for a folding knife repair. I followed your lead about using HSS for the brass alloy. A big plunge cut instead of several light cuts gave me the consistent diameter pins I needed. Thank you again.

    I definitely learned something, thanks,
But i did notice a slight wobble of the end of the nail before you parted it off,
What do you think caused that ?

Thanks again Joe. I’m glad that the words “close enough” aren’t in your vocabulary.

18:01 magic formula cadcam not want you know is (1-TAN(A/2))*TOOLRADIUS.
meaning if have 2x15degree chamber on Z and tool r0.8. (1-TAN(7.5))*0.8=bout 0.695 (remember in that head LOL)
it means my Z is -2.695 end of cut diameter and 2.695*TAN(15)*2 is start Z0. -+ depend is final diameter outside or inside. i dont use cadcam bcoz drawing part takes more than actually write Gcode on machine and click cycle start before you generate any code on cadcam bcoz redred collision error(fusion360) LOL never never never cut inside my path i told. why fusion360 do it LOL i not get it. this is path cut it. cant be so hard LOL.
its okay bcoz we write gcode faster than cadcam seller make gcode to test i allready cut part. boss did not buy cadcam bcoz i was faster xD LOL

I did a similar small part years ago that had an arm on one end. I had to do it on a high-speed lathe that was capable of doing 30 to 40,000 RPM.
Beautiful work Joe, thank you.
