When I was about 20 I saw him on Broadway in Moon for the Misbegotten. It was awesome.
Almost 20 years later he and I and a bus full of cast and crew were on our way to a set. Nobody would sit next to him so I did. He regaled me with stories of playing in the dirt on the road going to Malibu as a kid. He mentioned his actor father, no running water etc and so on. I knew about Betty Bacall but didn’t mention her. After a while he started to talk about great things he’d seen in Paris. He asked me if I knew about them. I said I’d never been to Paris. He just about exploded. He just about threatened to get me a ticket. I said, “Well, it’s not like I don’t want to go “. All of a sudden I was struck down a notch. Then during lag time during the shooting I often heard him telling other actors about, “Betty”.

Never saw him in a play but his performance in the movie version of "Long Day's..." was enough stagger me with his talent! He was such a fine actor - and this is stellar YouTube writing.

He was great in The Day After, a TV movie that blew minds, and prompted news anchors to declare after the airing "We are still here." (or something to that effect) I'm 66 now, and that moment in history still haunts me.

First time I remember, seeing him was as a child when he did a television, Hallmark Hall of Fame version of the house without a Christmas tree. He was a cold and distant father to a sweet and imaginative child who had been left motherless. He was brilliant. Just brilliant. Even as a child, I could see that.

Can I just say your writing on all the narrations of your series is superb. Eloquent, precise, honest, lovingly lyrical and well edited.

A fascinating actor. It's difficult to pick a role when he has always been consistently great.

I was fortunate to catch him in a matinee performance of "Moon for the Misbegotten". It was the production that included Colleen Dewhurst and was televised two years later.(Every evening performance was sold out.)

I'd seen him in movies (I was going to list them until I realized how long the list was!). So I shouldn't have been surprised about how wonderful he was.

Makes you wonder if it's easier to do complex plays written by complicated writers like O'Neil & Tennessee Williams if you're as messed up as the character you're playing.

If you have not seen Long Day's Journey Into Night, do so. It was filmed in real time in a continuous take just as if you were watching it in a theater on Broadway, better actually because your living room becomes their living room. It is breathtaking.
