  Fun fact : Andersonville had a 33% death rate. Camp Douglas in Illinois had a 31% death rate. So, you don't want to get captured by either side

  Camp Douglas was the North's Andersonville. My great grandfather was captured at the battle of Franklin, Tennessee, Nov. 30, 1864. He was sent to Camp Douglas, in Chicago.

  I once heard a wise man say that executions should be accompanied with solemnity and godly regret at the need to take a life.  I don't understand shouts of celebration then, or now.  Thank you for this video.

  I visited Andersonville back in the late '90s.  A monument to Wirz still existed in the town square.  A block away a Civil War reenactment was taking place.  The camp and POW/MIA museum is well worth it, showing Man's inhumanity to Man.

  My great-grandfather was 1st Sergeant, Co. G, 16th Ga. Regiment. He was captured at Cold Harbor on June 1, 1864, and spent the winter of 184 at Elmira, New York. The aggregate death rate for Elmira was almost identical to Andersonville, but William Hoffman, the Union's Commissary-General of Prisoners, deliberately withheld rations and medical care, unlike Wirz, who was handed 40,000 prisoners in a 10,000-person facility and only survival rations to feed them. Hoffman died at Rock Island, Illinois, in 1884, of old age, thus escaping a richly deserved noose himself.

  My great grandfather was a survivor..<br> His diary reveals the suffering.He was 99 ibs on release.He was 6&apos;1&quot;.He remained an invalid.As he contracted Malaria while imprisoned, Resulting in a diseased spleen and rheumatism.

  A movie was made about this back in 1996.Its gruesome,even for 96 time period.Thanks for the video.

  By the end of the war, the South had largely run out of resources....solders fraught and marched bare-footed. &nbsp; the North rejected the parole system used early in the war, which could have saved thousands of Northern POWs. &nbsp; I suspect Wirz did the best he could with what he had to work with.
