my great great grandfather fought for a regimen out of Pennsylvania. He was captured by the CSA troops in Spotsylvania Va and shipped to Andersonville. He died there and is buried in an unmarked grave. I visited there in 2022 when I moved to Georgia. it felt so surreal as I walked around the grounds. I suggest people go there. Thanks Jay for the video.

Top notch video. The reason you saw the women listed on the tombstones is that every veteran is entitled to have his wife buried with him. The veteran's name is on the front of the marker and the wife's name is on the back. Safe travels and God Bless.

My great grandfather worked at Andersonville. He was 17. He came from Sweden. His ship was destroyed in Savanah harbor. He swam to shore. He wrote back to Sweden âDonât come here, they do terrible things to each otherâ. After the war he went to Minnesota with the Swedes who were there. Later he went to Nebraska where he had a farm. Thank you for the video. Gives me a sense of what happened. He wanted obviously to get away as far as possible. The family never talked about it. It was my aunt who had the letters. He died in his 30s from sickness. The cemetery really makes you think about the gravity of it.

Great video! Iâve been to Andersonville a couple of times myself with the last time being in 2015 I believe. Itâs a very somber place and itâs important to remember our history no matter how controversial or how horrible the history might be. It was one set in history a society that doesnât know itâs history doesnât know where itâs going.

I cant even imagine what those prisons were like then. The contaminated water supply, disease, and demoralizing conditions. It must have been horrid! That museum is just amazing.

My 3rd great uncle died at Camp Sumter (Andersonville Prison) of an abscess. I go to visit his burial plot every Christmas on my way back from Tennessee to Florida. Now I get to teach my son about his 4th great uncle and his story. It's a surreal thing to experience. The people in the town have always been so sweet and very educational. The Drummer Boy Museum is a personal favorite! Thank you for sharing your trip to Andersonville.

That was very moving. We should never take our freedom for granted as many souls fought for it. Thank you for sharing Jay. That was incredible. â¤ď¸đ

I've been into Ancestry for almost 20 years. One of my wife's 3rd great grandfathers died from dysentery at Andersonville. He was a Union soldier from Lancaster County, PA. I agree that Wirz was in an impossible situation. There wasn't enough food to feed his own soldiers as well as the prisoners.

If you do any research on Wirz while commander of Andersonville, it is interesting to learn that at first, he tried his very best to take good care of the prisoners. He tried to build shelters, but deliveries of lumber and nails were stolen. Wirz was a scapegoat.
