  Thanks for checking out this video! Just a few points of clarification and a heads up on an opportunity to learn more about this topic. <br><br>First, I don&apos;t know when the oil had been previously changed in the rental car. However, the oil was very dark, so it was obvious the oil had not been changed recently. Also, the point of the video was not based on this single test. This is just an example to make the point. I&apos;ve attended a class taught by Paul Harvath and I&apos;ve interviewed Don Smolenski prior to making this video. Plus the thousands of used oil samples I&apos;ve done support the thesis of this video.<br><br>With that said, following the oil life indicator only works AFTER engine break-in and when the injectors are clean.   Just came across your channel. &nbsp;I was in the oil analysis business for 20 years, with well over 600k samples from every industry. &nbsp; IMO these information is factual and well delivered. &nbsp; Thank you for sharing your knowledge and unbiased opinions.

  It’s been over 10 years since worked at a car rental place. Back then, they tracked mileage in their own system and didn’t rely on the oil life monitor at all. Customers used to call in when the light came on and we would just let them know when the last oil change was actually performed. So, it’s a coin toss on whether the monitor was reset.

  My chevy v6 truck oil job costs around $55 done by me.. I do it when it says 20% .. I know it&apos;s too soon, but I&apos;m shooting for that 300,000mi odometer reading :)

  I always thought that the oil life indicators were just a gimmick and helped save those that just don’t do regular maintenance. Good to know that there is actually some science behind them.

  As someone who has a 2005 Silverado &nbsp;with oil life indicator 300k plus mile still going strong ! The oil life indicator &nbsp;works but will admit I change the oil when gets less the 25 % !

  Thanks, I always change around 20% to be safe. Now I feel confident I can go longer on my oil change.

  I read the Wikipedia article on Dr. Shirley E. Schwartz (<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t4e0oDBseqo&amp;t=53">0:53</a>), aka &quot;Sister Sludge&quot; (<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t4e0oDBseqo&amp;t=198">3:18</a>). She was (1935-2016) an amazing person who made the world a better place. It was nice of her to be concerned about her grandmother.

  I have read the engineering report detailing how the algorithm works for the “maintenance minder’ in my Honda. It’s written by the 6 Japanese engineers who developed it, and quite easy to understand. (It was translated to English!) the variables are similar to those discussed in the video. It pops up and tells me to change oil @6K.

  Yes, Honda has a sophisticated oil monitoring system called the<br>Maintenance Minder System, standard on most newer models, which uses sensors and algorithms to track engine operating conditions (like temperature, speed, and engine load) to accurately determine and alert you when oil changes and other maintenance are actually needed, replacing fixed mileage schedules. It shows oil life as a percentage, alerting you at 15% and signaling urgency at 0%, and also provides service codes (like A1, B1) for other tasks.
