"Grid stability" and "grid storage" are entirely different applications requiring entirely different battery technologies, which can work conjunctively.

These batteries, from what it sounds like, would be great at car charger stations. A slower grid could constantly charge them as they provide a high dump to a EV fast car charging.

As a person who’s spent decades managing the operation of the bulk electric grid, you’re speaking my language here. Very interesting.

Matt! You missed the opportunity to say "disturbance in the force"😂 4:25

This reminds me of when my semiconductor company was looking for a backup generator. They said they could get up in 5 seconds and we would hardly notice the power went out. We were looking for a fraction of a cycle response since almost all our equipment would abort after missing a cycle.

Any time urea, AKA carbamide, comes up in a serious talk, I know someone else in the crowd is snickering, and the five year old part of my humor is always here for it.

Hi Matt, thank you very much for your thorough report on our research, we appreciate it. We are just as enthusiastic about AGDIB and remain committed to its further development. In fact, we just kicked off the follow-up project SALSA. In SALSA, we’re planning to further validate AGDIB regarding its performance for grid stabilization in a industry-standard test scenario. The initial press release is only available in German, however, there will be further reports on the progress of the project, including in English. Stay tuned. 😊 Greetings from the IISB!

I’m a Chartered Electronic Engineer in the UK, my understanding was that the inverters were the slow part of the “battery power up” issue not the battery itself. And quite frankly, when running 50Hz any kind of battery is fast enough.

Last year in Spain we had this issue for the first time in history, our solar and wind were providing so much energy that the system collapsed and all of spain's electricity shut down for several hours up to 24 hour some parts of the country

Our Air Traffic Center has three giant diesel generators when commercial power is lost. A building-size battery bank immediately cuts in when power loss occurs, allowing time for the generators to fire up. It’s amazing how quickly they cut over happens, a blink of an eye.

These are essentially utiity scale UPS's.
For three decades now, I've used UPS's that operate with old fashioned lead-acid batteries. They switch over in a power failure fast enough to prevent your computer from glitching (or shutting down), and with a stable frequency. That's the whole point of having a UPS. That's electronics, not battery chemistry.
But my next UPS will be of the new lithium-ion sort. A ten-year service life is very appealing.
