This sounds great, but if you get in a car accident, you could be charged with a salt in battery.
I'll see myself out.

If I could get a home battery for 1k instead of 10k, that would be revolutionary

“CATL” consider this. The great thing about these batteries is the potential merger of this tech with large scale desalination plants. Instead of pushing dense heavy water after desalination back into the oceans (which is harmful to sea life), the plants can push that heavy water onto salt drying fields. We can collect the unwanted salts and transition them into something useful, batteries. It is hard to believe that salt used to be considered a luxury item due to its cost. Now in the desalination process, it is considered trash (unwanted) so now it is practically cheaper than free. These normally two differently different fields can be combined as obligate mutualism symbiotic. 👍🏼

If batteries fall to $10 per kwh they don't need to last forever as long as the battery pack is easily swapped out. You could swap out the battery pack 3 times during your lifespan of the car , and as long as the swap is easy , still be half the price of LFP.
We already accept , shocks, brakes , exhaust and even the starter battery in ICE cars need to be replaced several times during the life of a car.

The fact sodium batteries are less explodey is a good enough argument for me

CATL have a track record of delivering what they claim and not over-seling their technological advancements. They also have scale - they are the biggest manufacturer on the planet.

I live off grid in Alaska. My house can get very cold when I'm away in the winter. If I could get house batteries that were better than lead acid and don't die from cold or present a serious fire hazard, I would absolutely buy them.

Just went to CATL’s launch today of the Sodium Ion Battery in Changan’s cars in Hulunbeier, China. Tomorrow we get test drive the cars

Just researched a bit and here a some facts and numbers stated by CATL and other sources:

- mass production of gen1 sodium-iron batteries will start December 2025
- gen1 will have an energy density of 175 wh/kg
- they are aiming to start mass production of gen2 by 2027, with an energy density exceeding 200 wh/kg
- the batteries are currently more expensive than lithium-ion or lithium-iron batteries, becoming price competitive when economies of scale and adoption catches on, expected by 2027
- the batteries are operational until -30 C, they demonstrated fast charging with up to 1200kw
- Naxtra batteries are expected to last 10000+ charge cycles compared to the 2-4000 cycles of lifepo4 batteries
- CATL was one of the first battery manufacturers with sodium iron batteries in their portfolio and has been selling older gen products since 2021
- 67 car models are confirmed to launch using the new battery technology (although CATL is probably subsidizing the costs to be competitive)
- CATL is the biggest battery manufacturers the world and is expecting that the sodium-iron batteries will replace 50% of the lifepo4 batteries, a market they currently dominate

-> This does not seem to be vaporware, compared to many other „upcoming“ battery technologies mentioned on this channel, that are still years away and will be obsolete by the time they actually make it to market. Also, CATL actually has the cash to subsidize the batteries and speed up adoption until economies of scale kick in.

What makes this somewhat more believable that normal techno hype is the fact that it got delayed for 2 years. It is hard to fake or hype failures, so the fact that it clearly wasn't a perfect development/launch makes it more probable to be real.
