Gaming at 10-15 FPS was 100% just a thing you did as a kid in the 90s.

Ah this is awesome, the Weitek chip finally gets a chance to shine with DOS games! I'm tempted to give it a shot with a 15khz VGA monitor and see how it fares.

"Unregistered ShareWare Copy", now that's got some real nostalgia attached to it.

Duke, Doom, Heretic, Hexen, Descent…man we had no idea how good we had it. I remember attending a technology expo in the 90s that had VR helmets rigged up to Descent.

I love all your NES stuff, and this DOS/PC venture did not disappoint. This era was such an amazing time to be a kid gamer. Thanks for the memories and retro tech hacking ❤

The setup instructions for I think RedHat had a section that was called something like "How to setup Monitor Timings without calling the fire department!" 🤣

The Oak OTI087 was a perfectly respectable Super VGA chip in its day. The reason it's so slow on this Diamond card is because it's hooked up to the cheapest possible memory configuration, since it's only there for legacy compatibility. The OTI087 could use an 8-bit, 16-bit or 32-bit memory interface. You can see from the picture of the board at 2:40 that the memory for the VGA side of the card is a pair of AAA1M304P-05, which are 256Kx4-bit DRAMs. In other words, it's only got an 8-bit memory interface, giving it only a quarter of the bandwidth it's capable of using.
