Martin-Baker MB.5: The Fighter That Test Pilots Called Perfect — And the RAF Rejected

The Martin-Baker MB.5 was the finest piston-engined fighter Britain never put into service. Powered by a Rolls-Royce Griffon 83 V12 producing 2,340 horsepower driving a six-blade contra-rotating propeller, it reached 460 miles per hour at 20,000 feet and carried four 20mm Hispano cannons. Its fuselage was a bolted tubular steel frame with quick-release aluminium panels — ground crews could access any system in seconds, giving it the fastest turnaround time of any fighter in the world. The cockpit featured a full floor, a hinged instrument panel, and a bubble canopy with unobstructed visibility. When the Aeroplane and Armament Experimental Establishment at Boscombe Down evaluated it in March 1946, they wrote that the general design and layout was excellent and definitely better from the engineering and maintenance aspect than any other similar type of aircraft. They recommended its cockpit be adopted as the standard for all future piston-engine fighters. Every test pilot who flew the MB.5 reached the same conclusion. Squadron Leader Janusz Żurakowski called it the best aeroplane he had ever flown. Air Vice-Marshal John Boothman said it combined the positive stability of American fighters with the extreme manoeuvrability of British designs. Captain Eric Brown — 487 types flown, the most experienced test pilot in history — wrote that he felt so completely at home after climbing into the cockpit that he might have already flown hundreds of hours in it, a compliment he could pay to no other new type of advanced aircraft. Yet the RAF never ordered it. James Martin's obsessive perfectionism had delayed the first flight to May 1944 — seventeen months late. By the time the prototype was flying, the Spitfire XIV and Tempest V were already in service, and the Gloster Meteor jet was intercepting V-1s over southern England. A catastrophic engine failure during a demonstration before Winston Churchill in October 1944 — though the pilot survived — destroyed any remaining political momentum. The sole prototype accumulated roughly 100 flight hours before being relegated to ground training duties and eventually burned as a target in 1963. The MB.5's true legacy is not the fighter itself, but what it led to. The death of Martin's business partner Valentine Baker in the earlier MB.3 — an aircraft with no means of escape — drove Martin to develop the ejection seat. On July 24th, 1946, Bernard Lynch made the first live in-flight ejection from a modified Gloster Meteor. Today, Martin-Baker ejection seats have saved over 7,800 lives across 93 air forces. The company that could not sell a fighter to the RAF now equips the combat aircraft of the world. The MB.5 was the last fighter Martin-Baker ever built.
