  I grew up a loud, unambiguously black, gay theatre kid in a very red county in Michigan. Being faced with constant micro- and macroaggressions made me more aggressive toward racism and bigotry. Me and my siblings had to constantly create ways to affirm our own identities as young black men. Anything we did was black as fuck BECAUSE WE SAID SO. It taught us that validating one another is important.

  I saw an instagram post that really explained the issue of calling people &quot;white-washed&quot;. I don&apos;t know the user but she basically said that when black people call other black people white-washed it reinforced racisms as it commodifies being black as one thing; a standard set by non-black people. Black people can be anything. They can have goth style, &nbsp;be preppy, dress coquette, wear streetwear, literally wtv the fuck they want.

  As a fellow suburban black girlie (who was called white washed by my very light skinned father) I think this mindset is bred out of hurt and the idea of trust. <br><br>It’s like how a lot of women will let a man do 1000 horrible things to them but won’t let a female friend make one mistake without cutting her out. Pain/disrespect/abuse is “expected” from certain groups, so when it happens the impact isn’t as big. But when you’re hurt from people who you thought you’d be safe with or people who you thought would understand you, the pain hurts twice as bad. So black people receiving a crumb of disrespect hurts more than the suitcase of disrespect you’d get from a non-black person.

  The constant “omg you speak so well” and “you’re so eloquent” from students and teachers alike deteriorated me. I would take it as a compliment at the moment, but then I’d really think about it and be like damn…they thought I spoke in gang signs or sum. Especially going to Catholic school, there was such a adultification of me and other girls of color, with them being extra strict about our uniform skirts being “too short” or our shirts being “too tight”. We were always made to be the perpetrators because ethey never wanted to go after the real problem

  As a kid, I was definitely called an Oreo but that was mostly because I was a nerd who didn&apos;t play into stereotypes. Growing up, I realized that many other black people are actually like me, and the ones who tried to question my blackness were just losers. Many of us have different views, interests, and personalities, so we should never &nbsp;think are race doesn&apos;t like us.
