  Despite his limited screen time and conflicted writing, Kaworu had more chemistry with Shinji in a single episode than Mari did across 3 movies. Lol. Lmao, even.

  You put it perfectly when describing their relationship as "Shinji loves Kaworu because he's learning to love himself". While I do think their bond has romance in its nature it's never is carnal because that's not the point. They confort each other in an existential level by recognizing that they're both deserve to live.  Kaworu is conforted in his decision to let shinji kill him because he's convinced shinji will overcome himself, so he welcomes it, and shinji is conforted by kaworu's unconditional love, and its something that reluctantly, he doesn't lean on as a crutch, but a safety net ( that he lets go off). Two people ennamered with each other by merely being there. Does that configure a romance? sort of, but not in a way that becomes carnal or sexual, but in a complimentary harmony. They were great influences for ech other, but innevitably had to let go of that. To keep the Christian metaphor, I've seen sayings that Jesus's bride is the church, not meaning it in any carnal sense of the word, but saying that all the unconditional love and care that is supposed to (key word supposed) happen in a marriage is how Christ feels about those that follow him in order to overcome their own sins, and while it was accidental, kaworu and shinji mirror this dynamic

  It took 53 seconds for Shinji to kill Kaworu while he was in the Eva and holding Kaworu. That tells us that Shinji truly cared for Kaworu.

  What I find funny about Kaworu is that production interference made his death more impactful, not less. By refusing to let Anno kill off Toji because muh kids (the manga's interpretation is cool though), it meant that he could sidestep that restriction with an alien being while having Shinji cross a line he's never had to before. Making the choice to kill the one person who showed him unconditional affection for the sake of others.

  Both Shinji and Gendo at one point in the episode hold Adam in their right hand, though both have very opposing intentions

  Kaworu&apos;s intro also mirrors &amp; contrasts with Rei&apos;s imagery.<br><br>Both near a body of water. But where Rei is associated with the moon, Kaworu is introduced with a sunset on the horizon.

  What people seem to not get with Kaworu is that he was right to let himself get killed by Shinji but Shinji was wrong to kill him. Kaworu betrays his own kind&apos;s grand narrative (metanarrative) to prioritize his self interest (which is in oposition to his compulsion), which is to let Shinji/humanity live by choosing the death of himself/the angels. Shinji however doesn&apos;t betray his own kind&apos;s grand narrative, he lets go of his self interest and kills Kaworu despite not wanting to because he &quot;musn&apos;t run away&quot;.

  The series is weirdly jinxed in that all of its mistakes, shortcuts, and products of backstage strife somehow work with and even enhance the themes of the story. It&apos;s as close as animation has ever come to a William Friedkin production.
