  My kid quit a German dealership after 20 years for all these reasons never to return to auto repair.  Fed up with book rate and complicated repairs.  What happens when dealerships start charging $300 or $400 an hour to repair your car?  We're done, people won't be able to have their cars repaired and will just walk away from the loans.  This is a disaster in the making and the fuse have been lit.

  My son left automotive for HVAC and so did two of his coworkers.  ZERO regrets.  Does auto work on his own as side job instead.

  FoMoCo as well as other manufacturers have ruined the automotive industry. I have an apprentice that I'm positive will not end up actually working for the dealership and its not that he doesn't like what he does. Its that he thinks he's going to be able to continue with hourly wages and not flat rate pay. Flat rate makes a good technician a bad technician period. When you're fighting for your paycheck you are willing to take shortcuts that will lower the quality of work. Automotive technicians are some of the most educated people within society and its absolutely horrid how they are treated financially

  I did valve covers and the intake gasket on my boss's car last year and he'd been quoted "2 hours" labor by the dealership. It took 7 hours. It was a smooth job with no surprises and nothing broke. The hours calculation for tech compensation is total fantasy

  Manufacturers also make disposable products that are ridiculously over complicated and not engineered with repairs in mind.
