I remember my father playing these games back in the day. And he mapped every dungeon on a graphing paper thanks for the nostalgia

Thibbledorf Pwent was a Battlerager under King Bruenor. Harkle Harpell is a wizard from the Ivy Mansion. Both are characters out of R.A. Salvatores books and buddies of Drizzt.

I played this in the early 90s when it first came out on the Amiga 500. I loved it.

I've never been into these D&D RPG games. I had them. Pirated them as a kid. This one I enjoyed the most. But I got stuck and never finished it. Watched Jim Plays Games play through it. And now, I understand why it's so loved. I was enthralled watching him play it. Even bought the game on GOG. But, that wall of text for an ending? Amiga's ending was definitely needed.

This game gets 1000% easier when you realize that you're more mobile than the enemy. You can, in fact, beat Xanathar without using a single spell or weapon. Your entire party could be naked and you'd still win. And this is because of an interesting movement mechanic that applies to Xanathar as a quick enemy.

This game is a grid, so in order for you to be attacked, or to attack, you have to be in the same row or column, and facing the correct direction. Some creatures, slower ones like the Xorn, can only move and turn on different animations. Thus if they are facing you, side-stepping to the left forces them to take one "turn" moving left, placing them sideways to you, and then another "turn" turning to face you, before on a third "turn" actually attacking. While they're sideways to you, and when they turn... they can't attack! So as they're doing all that, you just unload as much damage as you can, and then... move again. Rinse, repeat, and your enemy never gets a chance to attack you... at all.

No enemy, not even Xanathar, is immune to this mechanic. The difference is that Xanathar's "turns" are significanlty faster than everything else in the game. Moreover, just to confuse you, whether you are "clockwise" or "counter clockwise" to them decides which way they go. I can't remember which one it is, but reflex memory suggests if you get them going counter-clockwise around you, you can move in a circle around them and do this trick.

Another interesting fact is that if a fast enemy has just moved in a direction to reach you and you're suddenly not next to them, they'll take one to two more steps in the direction they're facing before turning back and coming after you. And this is how your naked party beats Xanathar. When you first attack him, sidestep instantly. He should basically miss with everything and follow you into the room. Run around him and into his lair, staying close enough that he knows where you are. Into the area at the back with the trap, stand in front of the trap. He comes near, you sidestep, he moves next to you, you move really far away, he takes two more steps. This places him inside the trap. Then you just move in behind him. ... Fight over and you never used a weapon or a spell or that silly wand thing. You just gotta be quick.

This same trick largely works, but not perfectly, in EOB2. Unlike this one, you can't beat the big bad without fighting.

That drop to DOS at the end was the biggest shock to me. I had gained a level fighting the Beholder at the end and never got a chance to save my guys with the improvement. Not that it mattered. Once you won, that was it. My last save was right before the beholder fight, so the game was over to me

That's insane. I have played these games many years ago the oldschool way and I don't think I finished this one, but it never occured to me that a new version would exist with auto mapping and item identification. That's like insanely good. Unbelievable. I could easily replay this now with these great features and really enjoy it. Damn thanks for this!

PS: One of my issues in these old type of grid based games, used to be myself falling down an endgame pit with no sense of direction, only finding enemies with insane abilities that melt my armor or my weapons permanently. I mean it happened on a number of games. It felt like monsters were cheating, so disheartening and brutal then I ended up dropping the game. Oh well. Actually playing through Lands of lore 1 these days.

This game is over 8 years older than me, and ever since I completed Baldur's Gate I wanted to try out the GoldBox games (even though I don't have almost any experience with Blobber cRPGs, except for M&M 6-8). I think this video gave me that last push to finally try and play it.
Really great review, love the channel!
