This is what happens when you believe people who do well in the private sector know how to run a country.. They destroyed a post war rebuilding project in favour of building private wealth and protecting the City of London, which is a financial hub with no national interest except profit making.

Thatcher’s Tory government was full of people associated to big business so when it came to transport, those people were all in favour of private road transport as opposed to publicly owned rail transport. And thereby the UK became dependent on roads and road transport when rail transport would have been far more efficient and reliable. No other European country went that way! It says it all ! As a consequence industry across the country was not connect by efficient transport! We are still waiting for the regeneration of the north!

I remember a while back some historian saying Britain isn't a country, it is a London Empire. When you look at how the nation is run, that seems to make a lot of sense

Howe was one of the biggest idiots ever to be in the House of Commons. Look at his "managed decline" document for Liverpool, a commercial port city with a mixed economy, the only deep water port on that coast with a massive industrial and commercial hinterland.

The only thing that prevented a violent overthrow was the money coming in from North Sea oil paid for the unemployed. Norway used their oil income to save in a Sovereign fund now worth trillions. North Sea oil was squandered on the whims of a few Tory buffoons. And boy does that party produce them.

The problem due to inferior management class; bankers more interested in property speculation. No government industrial policy. The government serves CITY OF LONDON who sold the country to foreign interests especially to US private equity and asset managers like BlackRock. Then came Marg Thatcher

Patrick Minford and Economists for Leave/Free Trade.Minford had hold of the levers of the Treasury and the Bank of England in the early 80's under Thatcher. He tried out his crackpot Monetarist theory on the UK and the result was that it did not work in the real world, not even on it's own terms as the measures of money supply were distorted all over the place. Minford Monetarism caused an unmanaged unemployment to climb to 5m in a home grown recession with many thrown on the scrap heap forever and 100 year old firms with full order books closing because they could not get the credit to finance often full order books. It was the opposite of QE.
Monetarism also totally destroyed the Chilli's economy and as America's "British experiment", Reagan managed to avoid putting it in place in the USA.
Now Minford is back to finish job and admits that his one sided free trade would destroy manufacturing and much farming, as well as making the `UK even more South East centric.
These blood suckers need to be sent packing

Yes - this is the 'Post Industrial Society'. I have even heard Conservatives claim that the devastation of our industries was to tackle 'Climate Change'!!! Who on earth was talking about that in British politics in 1979? NO. They set out to smash the trade unions, to sell off Nationalised industries at prices far, far below their value, just as Public Housing was sold off at crazy discounts. Look at what our railways carry today. Not the coal, the iron ore, the steel or the products of our former manufacturing centres. The largest movement is container traffic from ports like Felixstowe to inland distribution centres and the containers are full of imported product from the far east, principally China.
As a student in the mid 1960s I wrote a dissertation on 'Changing Industrial Structure in North East England'. I learned a lot from writing it, but, above all, I felt that there had been little change in the dominance of coal mining, iron and steel, heavy chemicals, shipbuilding and marine engineering - all of which were subject to cyclical economic pressures. The various attempts since the 1930s to rectify this had produced little effective change leaving areas like the North East wide open to the attack, not from foreign military powers, but from our own Government - people who neither knew about the regions or the people who lived and worked there, and cared even less. No wonder Reform is nibbling away at their foundations.

Our politicians stood by and let this happen and they still try and get the citizens of our regions to vote for them.

It wasn't just the North that was affected! Manufacturing in the Midlands was decimated! The city of Coventry was turned into a ghost town!

Almost every problem we face today can be traded back to Thatcher. Housing problems, public transport too expensive and sparsely provided, energy problems, water companies failing, the death of manufacturing, the list just goes on.

Very sad. The skills base and the factory works that produced the goods that built the world.

Fractional reserve banking is the major issue Thatcher agreed to introduce for the bankers.
