On a school trip to Parliament in 1971 when I was 13, we were being shown round by our town's Labour MP. A woman approached our group in a corridor, walking briskly and carrying a large folder. Our MP asked us if anyone knew who she was. Having seen her on television, I piped up that it was Maggie Thatcher. Without breaking stride, Maggie beamed and said; 'that's right young man, well done.' I suppose I can rightly claim that I once met her.

What I really enjoy about the Rest is History is the stochastic dress code. Sometimes, they'll show up in three-piece suits, other times in hoodies, and there is never any obvious explanation as to why.

As an American, I wouldn’t want this period of British political history covered anywhere else. You two were in your best form on the episode!

Living in the North East I saw my employment opportunities destroyed day on day. Friends never had a stable well paid job. Some took their own lives. I escaped through education but lived in exile most of my life living away from my family. Financially I am fine but I have lost so much. I think we are heading for an economic apocalypse worst than the 70s. I am fortunate in that I will not have to make my way through the coming storm.

I have never felt more seen than hearing Tom defend Grantham's tourist value with reference to the signing of the Duke of Buckingham's death warrant. This is exactly how I structure my vacations and the sort of thing that excites me about visiting new places. Historical Nerds Unite!

When I was a little girl in America in the 80's, I thought it was super-cool that Britain had both a queen and a female prime minister!

Fawlty Towers, and Monty Python's 'Dead Parrot' and 'Cheeseshop' sketches, were about the impossibility of getting decent service in the UK in the 70s. Fast forward to 1989 and the Amnesty International gala The Secret Policeman's Biggest Ball, where John Cleese and Michael Palin reprised the 'Dead Parrot' sketch - but instead of making excuses, Palin admitted the parrot was dead and gave Cleese his money back with some gift vouchers. Astonished, Cleese turned to the audience - 'Well you can't say Thatcher didn't fix SOME things!'

Strangely, my favorite part of this is hearing the stories of Edward Heath’s rudeness. They’re hilarious.
