Brilliant video and channel
Poverty was real even in Britain in 1950s.
My father left us when I was 5 months old.
Mum had No money, nothing.
To apply for a separation order cost money she didn't have, it was a court case back then.
Gran gave us food when she could, but she was a very poor pensioner. We had only a crust of bread left in the house, when Auntie Mable came in to see us, her and her husband had a farm, she gave us a tray of eggs and a big cooked ham. Mum, Cried, and then prayed. Auntie say how we were living and paid for my mum to see a solicitor and pay for a separation order. My father then had to pay the court, our maintenance. OF ; 10shillings for mum and 7/6 d for me and my sister .
It stopped us from starving, Then the National Assistance Board, heard our case, and gave mum another £1-10 shillings. This was paid weekly, the rent on our council house was 7/-a week. It was a 1 bedroomed old cottage,
With outside toilet, we had coal range in the front room, the kitchen had a deep sink, where mum washed the clothes etc, it on had one cold water tap.
We had a long back garden where we planted potatoes.
We weren't then starving, we lived on stews really, mum got marrow
bones from the butcher cooked them on the range they made the stock base, she added what else we had, potatoes, carrots it was filling.
The National Assistance lady would come around and make sure you were still in need, ...
Mum bought an alarm clock, and each time the Lady came she had to take it to Grans to hide it incase they stopped our money.
School was wonderful, i had free meals. And free milk i loved it. So not a very long time ago, but a life time really.
