In 1989 at the age of 23 with $300 in my pocket and an airplane ticket I left the US and headed to Taiwan. It was a trip that I thought would maybe just be for the summer. 6 years later I was still in Taiwan, married to a woman from Taiwan and had 2 children.

We eventually moved back to the US but little did I know that the decision that I made over beers one night to head to Taiwan would be the most life altering and best decision I ever made.

Doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result is the definition of insanity. My son working at minimum wage jobs and Walmart for last several years with no home and debt is insanity!! He is selling his car and moving abroad and he finally has hope!! At least he got off the hamster wheel❤

It was 40 years ago my husband and I moved to Japan with no job, no work visa, no internet, no cell phones! 😳🙄🤣 We had read a book called Jobs in Japan and took the plunge. We started calling language schools from our hostel and we both got a job within a week at the same school. It changed our life forever. We are now happily retired and living in Penang, Malaysia. You do a great job showing people the many ways they can make this happen, Evan. It’s true, just be brave, help yourself by learning from others like Evan, and see how much better your life can be, not without its ups and downs, but you’re experiencing those where you are now, with a lot less opportunities to succeed than you stand by just taking a deep breath and going for it overseas. Keep up the good work, Evan.

I just want to say something for my fellow Americans.
I visited HCMC, Vietnam last September.
It is life changing.
I came back home, and am leaving for Vietnam and Cambodia, in a couple months, to live over there.
My point, is that once you step onto the soil of Vietnam, there is a whole psychic weight that starts to lift.
It is like having shackles removed.
I did not realize how heavy the group trauma of what is going on currently here at home, I was carrying, until I left.
When I returned, ir took about 3 days, and the 'high interest' emotional and physical costs of existing here hit hard.
Another thing that becomes painfully obvious is how selfish, isolating, empty, destructive and extortionate, the US lifestyle is.
I say all of this with uncondtional love and without judgement.
I love my country and am a disabled veteran
If you are a sensitive it is worth exploring what it would take to put yourself in a more healing location.

I flew down to Thailand, with 700$, with no idea how I was going to make money...I thought I would only be able to stretch that for about 2 months...I managed 11 yrs...When there's a will there's away...I wouldn't recommend doing like that though...But im the type of person if I dont just do it..I won't end up doing it at all...Now I travel back hm, ever 6 months...stay 6, work and then back overseas...veen doing that for the past few yrs..so 14 yrs of Traveling all together. ❤❤ Best decision ever. 😊

It’s 2026. Things are different for me. Back in the 90s I moved to Prague. I was 40. Still young. I taught English. I’m 71, with health issues. I live exclusively on SSD and SSI. $1200 a month here , with threatened cutbacks to my Medicare, assisted housing, and even my social security. and if I move to another country I lose $455. So that leaves me with possibly $798. I only have English teaching experience. Not data entry, software development experience. My “barrier” isn’t hubris. It is reality. I have disabilities. Ageism is a real thing. So seriously, even though I want to leave the US (I never lived in a “good” neighborhood). The world is different for impoverished elders. Your advice is for young people

This was a useful and important video. Right now, people aged 45 to 55 yrears-old are the biggest demographic migrating out of the United States. The reason is simple: No one can afford to live, let alone retire, in the US anymore. Case in point: my monthly expenses (i.e. utilities, phone. health care, transportation, student loans, basic groceries, and rent for my shoebox apartment in a non-central neighborhood in NYC) is over $5100...and increasing steadily. Job market and housing markets throughout the nation have become nightmarishly brutal, so there's really no mobility here -- even if you are highly educated, work in upper management and earn six figures, you are just barely scraping by and praying that your employer doesn't downsize or your rent doesn't go up anymore.
