  Living in Germany for 30 yrs. and married to a German. As a foreigner, it&apos;s very difficult to get accepted in circles as they are wary of anything or anyone new. Even if you are a German coming from a different city it&apos;s not easy to find friend easily.<br>I don&apos;t mind the directness but it&apos;s the tone. It&apos;s said in a hard, rough way. Empathy,openess and more friendliness would be great. <br>I once said good morning to the only person on the street approaching me and he stared at me the entire time. And he says coldly,&quot; do we know each other?&quot;

  Jason, thank you for sharing this. I felt very connected to your story.<br><br>I’m Chinese and have spent more than 20 years in Spain, most of them in Catalonia. I first came here as a university student, later married a fellow Chinese, and now I’m raising a little boy who looks very Chinese but, in so many ways, is Spanish on the inside. 😊<br><br>Interestingly, I personally didn’t experience that much racism during all these years in Spain. But when my son was only three, he had his first experience of racism at a French school here in Madrid. That affected me much more deeply than anything I had experienced myself.<br><br>It made me start thinking seriously about giving him the opportunity to grow up, at least for some years, in a Chinese cultural environment — not only to truly acquire the language, but also to build that sense of identity and belonging from within.<br><br>And somehow, God guided us towards Hong Kong.<br><br>Now my full Tiger Mother mode has officially been activated as I’m applying for primary schools for him. 😂🐯<br><br>At the same time, I’ve also been thinking about applying for Spanish nationality after spending so many years here. But the idea of giving up my Chinese passport still makes me hesitate. The world is changing so quickly — who knows what it will look like when our children grow up? Sometimes having more cultural roots, languages and choices feels like one of the best things we can give them.<br><br>By the way, another coincidence: I also studied and taught cross-cultural management in Spain, so that part of your story resonated with me too.<br><br>Wishing you and your family lots of luck on the journey ahead. Life between cultures can be complicated, but also incredibly rich — and sometimes quite funny. 😊hope to see you back in HK

  I moved from Germany to Canada with my parents when I was in my teens. High school was really tough because the students were cliquey and ignored me as my English was not fluent. It is hard to make real friends in this country because Canadians tend to be distant and aloof. So, this can happen in any country.

  As someone who was also partially raised in Germany I can relate to many things he’s saying.<br>Germany as a county is great. But unfortunately the level of happiness is often very dimmed - like if it’s forbidden to show any signs of happiness, whether In public or at working place. Also currently the political climate has not only changed but I also have the feeling that most people lost their path after Covid.<br><br>Yet I am very happy for the chances and opportunities I was given in Germany, as a foreigner. <br><br>Now living abroad, I really hope that nation finds its true spirit again.
