You are allowed to carry your jacket which doesn't count as luggage. The simple trick is to put clothes inside your jacket and roll it up. I carry 3 lengths of velcro tape velcro tape to wrap around the middle, left and right of my jacket. When rolled up the airline has no idea. They will just think you have a bulky coat that you obviously can't wear.
