I watched Starblazers as a kid in 1981. It wasn't until decades later that I finally got to watch the episodes I missed.

I used to run to & home from school to see it. It was on at 3 o'clock in the afternoon. I had 15 minutes to get home if I wanted to see all of it. School was out at 2:45. And you had to deal with crossing guards. Man I'd always make it but it felt like I wouldn't. Lol

As a Marine brat I was blessed to be able to watch all of the original Japanese versions It was confusing to see them later in the US and I felt bad for my friends as all the shows felt like they were dumbed down "for children" and it clearly showed the difference in maturity of my friends in Japan versus those in the US. Even the sukebe robot was used to teach children a lesson in Japan. They don't shelter children there from what is and isn't acceptable socially. They throw it all out there and you knew there were consequences for every action.

I was 8 when Star Blazers first aired and I couldn't wait to see each and every episode. But even at 8yrs old, I was a history buff that was deeply into WWII. And as I looked at the "Argo" I could swear I saw the superstructure of the IJN Yamato. Anime wasn't a word for anyone I knew back then. I had no idea this was actually a heavily edited SBY. I had no idea the political reasons for that. But it was more adult and meaningful than the other cartoons I was watching. Now, as I write this, I look behind me at my "Wall of Anime and Manga" and can look at the entire original SBY series. On top of my figure cases sits a 1/200 scale Space Battleship Yamato. On a lower shelf, in front of the original SBY anime series, sits a 1/1000 scale SBY. Speed Racer (Mach Go Go Go) and Star Blazers (Space Battleship Yamato) introduced me to anime long before I even knew what anime was.

As a teenager in the 1970's, glad I got to watch the American version. However, now as a male in my 60's, I would prefer to only watch the Japanese version (with the robot, pulling up the dress of the nurse).

I watched this back in the early 80's. Managed to meet and get the autograph and my picture taken with Amy Howard Wilson back in 2001. She did the voice of Nova for the first 2 seasons. This series and franchise are my favorite anime series followed by Bubble Gum Crisis.
I just love the ships designs. It's the reason why I got into the history og naval warfare.

I was enthralled by this series as a kid, and I think ALL the choices regarding the changes to the American version improved and streamlined it dramatically. That being said, I feel it's important for adults to watch the Japanese version as well, because it contains powerful messages that could have gone over children's heads.

Love Star Blazers! It's underrated how it opened the door to anime for many of us before even Akira or Dragonball. Capt Gloval from Macross/Robotech pays homage to this series.

I agree with almost everything in this video, but with one exception. This anime actually wasn't for kids, although I was in high school when it first came out. I understand that the timeslot for the anime was in the mornings before school, so when I first came across Starblazers I realized that this anime was Japanese as I have lived overseas in the early 70's and grew up there watching Japanese movies and anime. I was extremely happy seeing those shows come to the USA! The story line was way too advanced for kids who grew up watching Scooby-do and bugs bunny. In addition, we had grown up with GI-Joe with non-stop military action and explosions, but no one was killed onscreen. Enter the imported Japanese anime and it's clear that people die in war, and it was clear that they died. The interestingly edited Robotech series actually showed Zentradi warriors getting vaporized.
