If it were'nt necessary to do social media as an artist, I'd be off all platforms today. They all suck energy out of us. It'd be a lot better to concentrate on good songwriting, jamming, working on a great live show. However, we all have to play this game sadly.
Sorry for being so negative and thanks for the great video man!

Great advice as always Damo. I usually put in 6 or 7 hours a day. Learning new songs for my Dueling Pianos gig; keeping my Elton set ticking over; writing the next album (at the moment) doing a bit of promo for the double A-side coming out this Friday; bit of teaching; gigs 4 nights a week. I did the TikTok live for a couple of hours over 3 or 4 months every day until I started working on the album and it definitely works. It's energy consuming though so I've shelved it for a while. Anyway, not here offering advice as I just do what's right for me but wanted to thank you for yours!!

Having had a music career for 30 some odd years, I remember the time before social media. And I miss it a lot.

Not having to deal with the soul sucking of social media made music a lot more fun than it is today.

There are so many things about social media that work against musicians. And don't get me started on the streaming services that have made making a living off of music untenable for the vast majority of musicians...

I plan to not invest myself personally in the content going forward. Meaning I don't plan to let my emotions play a part on the social media for music. I will continue to post. But I am not gonna let the reactions (or sometimes lack thereof) affect my mental state or health. There is a class action lawsuit nationwide against social media companies for destroying the mental health of millions of teens. That wouldn't be happening, unless there is a lot of truth to how unhealthy social media is, even for adults.

I will post positive stuff, that circles my music going forward. But beyond that, I don't plan on reading the negativity from people. Nor will I get drug into the cesspool where trolls live. Or into personal conversation. If you look at most major artists and even actors, they post. But then they basically let the post be. Meaning they do not interact with the social media of the post after that. There is obviously a reason why so many of them do that.

Just straightforward positive and entertaining content. Without my personal energy being sucked into it. So that it doesn't drain my positive energy in the future.

I still hold out hope that the day is circling back around, where the artistry of music is the most important part. And that fans will also decide to appreciate the music for what it is. And start supporting artists in a way that allows them to make a living off of music again... 🤷

I just want a drummer willing to learn and play my bullshit. That's one small step for most bands. One... giant leap... for my dumbass.

Damian, you hit me with this advice in a way I hadn’t considered before, but it completely makes sense and resonates. My career experience so far has been customer service and B2B support so telling us this is about looking after people really clicked!!! Thank you SO much for these nuggets. Went live for the first time ever on TikTok yesterday and it was way more fun than I thought it would be. 🤗🤗🤗

The key difference in the analogy is that you can physically exercise doing the same thing every day, and it results in endurance and strength. If you do the same things in music every day, people get bored. To put it simply, people want to be entertained... so they want quality AND quantity... not one vs the other. They want to come running back to the artist, thinking "Oooh! I wonder what he/she is going to do today!!"

Could you make a video on how to make this happen while still being forced to work a 9-5 on the side? That would help a lot!

I'm with you and I think it's solid advice. I make four to six tiktoks per day and then cross post them onto youTube shorts and Instagram. My following is growing and so is my Spotify numbers . Slowly but surely

The thing I'm doing that I think separates me from many other artists as well is lots and lots of songwriting. I'm trying to put a new song out every two weeks and compile songs that make sense as either waterfall releases or potentially EPs. I feel like a lot of artists have one song that does well but they just need to keep praying. It makes you better at writing I think

Damo, my guy, this is great advice, like always! I keep looking back to your video “It’s Too Late To Release Music In Your 30s” video. In spite of it being very mistitled (and nearly three years old) it’s my favorite video you’ve ever posted because it gives hope to this who have been trying for years, telling them there is still a way to get their name out there and make an impact in music!
