It’s interesting that he does know he’s ill. It isn’t as if he was just blinked into existence every seven seconds. He realizes time has passed and that there’s something not functioning as intended in his head.

It is essentially impossible to imagine what it would be like to be Clive. As people with normal memory function, we can only get around the edges of his illness. The saddest part of this story to me is that over time, he has processed emotions about his illness. This is because your emotions aren't controlled by the same part of your brain as forming new memories. Early on in his illness, he got angry all the time, but now, he's more depressed and resigned to it. He understands on an emotional level how sad it is to be in his situation, and you can tell because he always answers questions about his illness the same way. He is never surprised that someone is asking him a question like that.
