11:09 you'd be surprised to know that the animal plotline COMPLETELY DISSAPEARS in the broadway musical in Act 2 😭😭😭 it's actually a miracle that we even see them still mentioned in the movie, so thank god they fixed that

What’s crazy to me is that in the Wicked fandom it’s well known that the second half of the play is weaker and has big plot holes because it has to contort Elphaba & Glinda’s story into the cannon of the Wizard of Oz movie, and rather than make changes to improve those plot holes from the play they just…kept them in there. They know how to make improvements from the play, like the OzDust Ballroon scene in Part 1, but instead they stick to the OG play’s story beats. And it all still feels rushed despite being over double the length of the play’s second half too!

I still don’t understand why Madame Morrible — someone with the power to control the weather like Storm in X-Men, the headmistress of a prestigious university, and a member of Oz’s high council — would need to team up with a con artist and a spoiled girl with no magic just to control Oz?? AND THEN EVEN GETS DEFEATED BY THAT GIRL?? Like, girl, you can literally summon a typhoon with just a few hand gestures?! This makes no sense to me.

It's definitely jarring if you haven't seen the Broadway musical before, but also note that the musical makes changes from the book, which the book itself is already a spin off of the original wizard of Oz book.
So basically this is like a game of telephone where we are like 5 times removed from the original story at this point. So things are just all kinds of messed up by now. Haha

Glinda is singing that section to herself in Thank Goodness. Its easy to miss but the confetti is suspended in mid air during that part of the song, implying time not passing or passing extremely slowly and shes thinking all of this in a second

Nessa can’t actually read from the Grimmerie, that’s why the spell doesn’t work. She looked at the page and tried to read it, but since she doesn’t have Elphaba’s powers she can’t properly read any of the words. Also, her turn to evil was more obvious in the musical, where she’s just flat out unlikable the whole time. Here the only foreshadowing we get is her glaring at Boq when she realizes he likes Glinda more than her, and her often being insensitive to Elphaba’s feelings.

The first movie added that scene with the Wizomania show, which I think was meant to provide an alternate explanation for why Elphaba has powers—basically, she’s the chosen one, destined to save Oz, however I guess Glinda being able to read it messes that interpretation up a little.

I don’t think Glinda knew about the cages in the Wizards basement, from her pov, Elphaba broke the deal for no reason.

Fiyero sent Elphaba a letter written on that piece of cloth, which explains his entire plan. She hides it before Glinda can see it, and lies about what it says.

Overall I think this movie was always going to be flawed, but I feel like it got butchered in the editing room at the last minute with all those deleted scenes. Hopefully we get a Lord of The Rings style extended cut somewhere down the line.

Also one of the things I disliked about the second half is how they “softened” the Wizard. In the first film they did such a good job showing him as a silly and charismatic dude who was actually a power hungry megalomaniac who knew how unjust his actions were when Elphaba confronted him. But then in Part 2 they made him a silly dude again? The fact that Elphaba wasn’t raging at him when she confronted him again after years on the run was so strange to me!

You mentioned a lot that the characters were unreasonably angry at elphaba since all she did was try and help them. I think that’s the point, particularly with the cowardly lion. He is untrusting of elphaba because she took him from his home. Now, we know that there was a good reason for this but all the lion sees is an act of evil. Same goes with the Tin man, and the monkey. They are unable to understand what elphaba was doing is kindness. The movie is getting to the point that the ozians perception of “goodness” is twisted. They see killing someone and abusing animals as a good deed, while elphaba good deeds are perceived as wicked. This really comes to a climax in the song “no good deed” where elphaba recognizes that “no good deed goes unpunished” and resolves to never be good again because of it.

btw since you haven't seen the broadway musical itself, you have to understand that the part 2 of that version in itself is SO MESSY, to the point of almost no saving 😂 yes, it's THAT rushed, convoluted, and overwhelming. so if what you see in this movie is pretty messy too, then you have to give them props for being able to at least save what little crumbs that the musical gave us many years before this movie came out 😅

Glinda is a political figure meant to represent a "simple" and easy to understand concept of good for the people of Oz. Her blue dress wasn't just an outfit she chose to wear that day, it's like her uniform. It's her official "Glinda the Good" dress that she's meant to wear when making special appearances around Oz. The only point in the story where she makes a political appearance in a different dress (her pink bubble dress), is after she kicks Morrible and the Wizard out and makes her speech about wanting to make actual change, symbolizing her transformation from a political weapon to a proper political leader. I think Yall forget that for most of this movie Glinda is not really in control of her image. Everything she does is part of a deliberate image so there isn't that much room for personal choice and expression, even with her clothes.
