An interesting reverse of this adaptation problem is Legally Blonde. Legally Blonde the musical actually fixes some story and character arc issues from the movie. They actually gave Elle’s arc depth with heavy dialogue changes and clever musical motifs. Basically Wicked has no excuse, it can be done.

I believe what they could’ve done for the animal subplot is have scenes where the Wizard is explaining to Madame Morrible how animals on earth are treated. The madame could be intrigued by the idea of all animals being non sentient subservient to the people of Oz. She could’ve been the cause of the Great Drought she controls the weather it was right there.

I hated the cat fight, her sister just DIED and then they are giggling and doing a silly fight in front of her dead body? It was so weird

The fact that they didn't take advantage of the fact that they had Jonathan Bailey and didn't have him do what he proved to do great with: A walking disaster of a man who is terrible at making decisions but had to step into a father role for a kid (Dorothy here) and try to not lose his mind along with everyone else.

It was rushed however in their defense in the play and the book everyone said the second half was a downgrade. It was like no one knew how to end it

i believe the show was this successful to begin with because of ‘i watched the wizard of oz as a child and remember parts of it’ crowds, who went ‘hey, i remember the flying monkeys… aaah, so this is how they were made’ and ‘aaah, this is where the lion comes from’ and ‘oh this is who the tin man was the whole time?’ and ‘hey, how did he become the scarecrow?’ throughout the whole second half of the play. that was my experience, and i think many others’ too.

Whilst I like how they fleshed out the animal subplot and Glinda's backstory, it wasn't really needed but what was needed was more fleshing out of the length of time between Dorothy's arrival and the melting scene. It flashes past in the blink of an eye and this was an opportunity to see some of Dorothy's journey along the yellow brick road from Elphaba's perspective but they just skipped over it as they do in the play.

Something that really bugged me (as an average movie-goer) was how little the magic made sense.

As a general rule, the more your story utilizes magic, the more you should explain what it can and cannot do. Wicked: For Good was infuriating in this regard.

Why couldn't Elphaba use the Grimerie on the Wizard or Madam Morrible from a distance like she did with Fiyero?

If Madam Morrible can manipulate the weather to conjure a house from nowhere to airstrike Nessa, why couldn't she do the same thing with Elphaba?

If Madam Morrible can control the freakin' weather, why was it so easy for Glinda (who has no magical powers) to imprison her?

Concerning Fiyero's uniform, to me it looked like Elphaba was reading something when she held it so I think Fiyero tore off a part of his uniform and used it to write a note for Elphaba. I'm 99% sure that's what the scene was implying but some verbal confirmation would have definitely helped clear up the confusion. Maybe a close up shot of Elphaba's hand crumpling the piece of uniform so we could see that there's something written on it but make it quick so we can't clearly read to words. That way we know there's some kind of message but it doesn't spoil the reveal that Fiyero is alive.

I was lucky enough to see Idina and Kristen perform this when it debuted on Broadway. I always understood idina’s performance in Act II indicating that the witch was gradually losing her mind up until the treatment of Dorothy and then finally snapping out of it during “For Good.” The movie, I think, handles Elphaba with kid gloves and would never allow for interesting and justifiable spiraling.

I just want to give my pov on Glinda and Elphaba’s relationship. For a person who has been bullied, I understand why Elphaba does not need further apology from Glinda. Because she understands Glinda’s capacity in her bubble, and she’s ok with that. Plus, as the big sister to Nessa, Elphaba also sees Glinda like a little sister that needs guidance not forced aha moment. Elphaba can be in and out of Glinda’s world because she is already strong, but not Glinda even if she wanted to.
