Electroreception is ancient, exists across every major vertebrate group, and was then LOST entirely in the lineage that became modern bony fish. And then it came back. It re-evolved independently in exactly two lineages of nocturnal fish, and one of them is the catfish. They lost the sense and evolved it again from scratch, because hunting in the dark made it worth having twice. 🔬 CORRECTION #1 — NEUROMASTS DON'T DETECT ELECTRICITY. You'll hear that constantly and it's wrong. Neuromasts detect water MOVEMENT. Touch at a distance. Every fish has those. The electrical sense lives in separate structures called AMPULLARY ORGANS, sitting in fields flanking the neuromast lines. Modified hair cells that gave up detecting movement and became sensitive to electricity instead. The catfish didn't upgrade its lateral line — it grew a second system alongside it. 📏 CORRECTION #2 — THE ONE MICROVOLT FIGURE IS A SHARK NUMBER. It belongs to marine sharks and rays, a different animal in a different medium. The real catfish measurements: training experiments showed detection of DC fields at 0.3 millivolts per cm. Another set put it under 120 microvolts. The review figure for freshwater sits around 100 microvolts per cm — roughly a hundred times less sensitive than the number everybody quotes, and still astonishing. 🔩 WHAT THE COPPER DOES: two dissimilar metals touching in a conductive liquid form a GALVANIC COUPLE, so electrons move between them continuously.
