Are You Using the Wrong Bluegill Bait? September Fishing Guide

That's when everybody goes — and it's the reason most people have never caught a big one. 🐟 HERE'S WHY YOU CATCH SMALL ONES: through the summer, small bluegill sit in the hot shallow water where everybody fishes. The big ones aren't there at all. They went deep looking for cooler temperatures weeks ago. Then the water cools, and they come back. For a few weeks in early autumn the LARGEST bluegill in your lake move briefly back into the shallows to feed — which puts them within reach of a bank, a dock, and a four dollar rod for the first time since May. 📊 AND THE PART NOBODY KNOWS: the schools you find in September and October are genuinely BIGGER than anything you'll see during the spawn. Not the fish — the schools. More fish, in fewer places, and all of them feeding. 🪝 THE WHOLE PROBLEM IN ONE SENTENCE: a bluegill has a voracious appetite and a very small mouth, and those two facts pull in opposite directions all day. A #6 Aberdeen is about the largest hook you should use, and #8 or #10 is better on most water. Thin wire, four pound line, small split shot 12-18 inches above. The most common reason somebody fishes all afternoon and catches nothing is a hook the fish was never able to get in its mouth. 🎣 THE 15 — counting down: 15. Wax worm — the easiest bait to get one to eat when nothing works 14. Mealworm — tougher shell, survives the small fish stealing everything 13. Small popper fly — and you don't need a fly rod 5. Freshwater grass shrimp — natural food, not an imitation of it 4. Snail meat — what the big ones in the shallows are actually eating 3. Crayfish tail — tough, stays on, selects for size 2. Jig tipped with live bait — profile plus scent at once 1. 🥇 THE RED WORM 🥇 WHY #1 ISN'T ABOUT THE WORM: a red worm is the most reliable bluegill bait there's ever been. What decides whether it works for you is the BOBBER sitting above it — and almost everybody uses one that's far too big. Too large and the bluegill feels the resistance when it takes the bait and spits it straight back out. You never even see the bite register. That's the most frustrating experience in panfish fishing: a bobber that twitches and dances all afternoon and never goes under. That was never the fish being finicky. 😴 AND #10 IS THE ONE THAT SOUNDS MADE UP: in autumn, when the water gets down toward 60°F, big bluegill move into shallow calm pockets and RAFT. They sit just barely under the surface, motionless, apparently sleeping in place, and they'll do it in the same pocket every evening for weeks. Somebody who found one described coming back every evening for almost a month until he got tired of it. 🎯 AND THE THING THAT SEPARATES PEOPLE WHO CATCH BULLS: bluegill school BY SIZE.
