When the big thing goes out of reach, you buy the small thing instead. A bottle of perfume instead of a deposit.

Everyone has one. What was yours?

I'm usually not one to comment on anything, but I want to say that this was an incredible analysis of the current existential crises everyone outside that 2% is having.

Your instinct for storytelling is top-notch. I didn't expect this to be tale of generational struggle, macroeconomics, housing crises, or wealth transfers; but I stayed for them because you made it impossible not to. Truly captivating work

As a millenial who graduated with a good degree in 2009 and couldn't get a decent job, this is all too poignant and relatable. I spent the next 10 or so years confused as to why hard work and studying a lot didn't bring me the automatic success that was promised, and meanwhile bought perfumes and make up because that's what I could afford and what consistently made me feel better. Then I gradually realised that it wasn't just a me problem, it was most of us. Stopped me from feeling guilty about buying a perfume when I couldn't afford a house.

Clicked on this to see what the subject matter is, noticed it's over an hour long and thought to myself I won't watch the entire thing. Here I am, at the end of it, having wept 3 or 4 times during this wonderful dissection.

The way you presented this story really encouraged me to think about my own life in a reflective way. I'm 44 and my husband is 51. We lived very marginally, moving every two years for our twenty-one years together, and once a year, I'd buy a perfume using PayPal Pay In Four, just as you described. In late 2024, we finally bought an apartment of our own. The reason why we could do this is because his father died after a very brief and serious illness. My father-in-law wore Brut. It took us almost nine months to be able to move into our new apartment, during which time we had to pay for a rental month-to-month, and I bought myself my first expensive perfume, because I was allowed, Rose of No Man's Land from Byredo, and kept it wrapped in the box, telling myself once we finally moved, I'd open it to celebrate. I did just that, smelled it, and cried. Mostly because I think I'd rather still have John in our lives than this apartment and the budget to buy a real perfume not on a payment plan.

To utilize perfumery as a prism to shine a spotlight on the contemporary state of a world in crisis is a feat only you could accomplish! Your analysis and connoisseurship is genuinely superb, and I laud you for not only providing edification to your audience, but providing them the opportunity to think critically. Brava! 💜

I am a late millennial living with my parents, going to therapy and getting lectures about work ethic in the worst job market have had in my own lifetime. All of your points ring true, it's almost scary. I do not see myself ever affording a house. Maybe we will as a society return to communal living and I will live in a small hut on my parents' property...

The small affordable thing for me is my dog. I buy her more treats and toys than she strictly needs, and don't regret any of it. For myself I look mostly for second-hand perfume because new ones are still a little pricey unless you go to the really really low budget. I'm exactly the kind of person who gets a photograph of the original, because standing at the high end perfume counter I feel too poor to even breathe the same air as the bottles.

Grown up content that is much needed. Thank you. 1975 GenXer here. I think my first fragrances were from a collection called Verve. I was probably 11 years old.

I’m a dinosaur, my concept of perfume and what it should do crystallized in the 80s. No “skin scents” for me, I still like my perfume to arrive ahead of me and linger behind me. Longevity and sillage, that’s perfume, to me.

I seriously adore your videos, I so appreciate your critical, calculated perspective of the fragrance industry and its influence on the human experience. As a middle millennial, you've explained what I've been feeling in a much more articulated way than I ever could haha. Scent is an escape (among other things of course), and there are so many reasons why we individually would want a moment to escape reality... personal, political and beyond. Very eye opening as well to learn that men are technically feeding the industry more than women right now. Loving this morning's brain breakfast bahaha. Thank you for your content, as always!
