The "HEY ABBOT!" joke was a reference to Abbot and Costello, the comedy duo most famous for the "Who's on first" routine

The stealing from the rich and giving to the poor line was added later as a core character trait.

For the gamers out there, Will Scarlett grew up to be Alan Wake and Dr. Darling :-)

As well as the two Robin Hood films starring Erol Flynn and Kevin Costner, the film also pokes fun at medieval clichés and other films. Ironically, the costumes are more historically accurate than in most medieval flicks.

Love this, AND your reaction to it. Aside from the principal cast, Mel Brooks uses so many brilliant performers in supporting roles.
Robert Ridgely (the hangman) was in 3 films; Dick Van Patten (the Abbot) was in 3 films; and the legendary Dom DeLuise (Don Giovanni) was in 6 Mel Brooks films.
Continue to do the Mel Brooks films. But, if you're doing Dracula Dead and Loving it make sure you watch the 1931 Dracula and the 1992 Francis Ford Coppola Dracula - those are the two main films that are parodied. If you know them, you'll appreciate it more.

Tjis is a parody of both the old Errol Flynn Robin Hood and a dig at the "Robin Hood: Prince of thieves". Which makes it that much greater!!!❤
