  A dear friend of mine named Carol Wilcox died recently at the age of 93. She was a friend of Rubinstein&apos;s through her former husband Max Wilcox, the record producer. I knew her before dementia began to impact her and got to hear lots of stories of her time with him - even in dementia many stories were retained in fragmentary form. She was his page turner at numerous recitals, including one in Geneva. Through this friendship she also met many other illustrious musicians. She said Rubinstein was performing a Schubert sonata for a small gathering of friends and stopped mid performance and stepped into the other room; Carol followed and saw him trembling in the other room with tears streaming from his face - he said the piece was simply too beautiful and reminded him of somebody he cared for deeply that he lost. She never told me which sonata that was - I wish I had tried to get that out of her. <br><br>When she was mere months from passing and much less lucid than when we first met a decade ago, I played her this video and she seemed to go somewhere very far away and beautiful. There was a deep, childlike wonder and also an ancient knowing all in one. Her final gift to me was her copy of Rubinstein&apos;s autobiography. I&apos;ll cherish that forever.

  When watching and &nbsp;listening to Rubinstein perform, I feel like he is the living embodiment of the golden mean. There is something so right, so balanced and noble in his interpretations.

  Artificial is about right but the weird tints hardly denote Intelligence. Best to shut your eyes and just listen to this greatest of great artists.

  A Genious, a fabulous artist.<br>Lang-Lang, Bunin, and most of the famous Speedy- Gonzales pianists of the 21th Century play extremely fast.<br><br>Rubinstein could play at an intense high &nbsp;speed. Neverthless, every single note was individualised , Sharp and Clear..<br><br>His performance of the Ritual of Fire, in 1947, at Carnagie-Hall, &nbsp;his hands appear to be blurred, -- such is the flow of his movements.<br>And yet, one can &quot;see&quot; and hear every single note flying through the air, &nbsp;like a flok of birds.
