  Wow.  I've listened to Tchaikovsky's masterwork dozens of times, but this was the first time featuring Rubenstein. He's quite an artist.

  Amazing ! I was lucky enough to hear him live in April 1973 in Newcastle-upon-Tyne in England when I was eight. My sister still has the programme, there was plenty of Chopin of course and I think a Beethoven sonata in the first half. He would have been 86 then. What a phenomenal pianist, and never showy or flashy. Such a long career and he came across as a lovely man too. Some of the over-hyped modern concert pianists today don&apos;t get close to this level. He was 95 when he passed away in 1982. It&apos;s easy for this famous concerto to become a bit of a cliche, but not when Arthur Rubinstein plays it. Richter was brilliant at this one too. Just had to add that the flute player is gorgeous, wonder if he is still alive ?
