It's funny how Americans think all these normal European supermarket things we've had for decades are some great innovations.

It's so hilarious that Walmart failed in Germany and now Aldi destroys chains in US

Fun fact: in Germany, pretty much every supermarket has these locked shopping carts. BUT by now people have figured out how to unlock them without a coin. So you can basically always find unlocked carts at the station. However you still NEVER see an abandoned shopping cart floating around on the parking lot. It just doesn't happen. Even if people get their shopping cart "for free", they still return it to the station. We consider this as sort of a gentlemen's agreement between the store and the customer: as long as the carts are returned anyway, the store won't enforce them being re-locked. Everybody wins.

Even in Germany where peanut butter has no tradition there are two types of it at Aldi.

All this has been standard in all supermarkets in Europe for decades, certainly in the UK, it's not Aldi magic it's just being efficient.

Germany in the 1980s and early 1990s: Aldi did not scan! They had never more than 1000 different products, the cashiers new all items nos and typed them into the machine. That was even faster than scanning.

The Aldi computer offer (2x year) was a legendary offer, unbeatable in the early 2000’s. If you needed a computer, that was the deal

A shopping cart isn't a trick—it's the European standard. It's not just at the grocery store that you grab a cart yourself—it's at every supermarket. 🎉🎉
