The Dark Reason Russia Can't Retire the Dragunov

In May 2023, Russia officially adopted a brand-new rifle to replace the Dragunov. The sixty-year-old design was finally finished. By 2025, Kalashnikov Concern was building Dragunovs thirteen times faster than the year before. The replacement existed, it had passed every test, it was formally adopted, and Russia was accelerating production of the very rifle it had just retired. The comfortable explanation is bureaucratic stubbornness. The real answer reaches back farther than the rifle, to a brass cartridge designed for a Tsarist bolt-action in 1891.
