Could not have built my Eberron campaign without these videos

I ran a campaign back in 3.5e where the party were from Cyre, and the main plot was about finding a way to go back in time and prevent the Day of Mourning. At the end of the game, they managed to find a way to go back in time, but then it turned out that their chronomancy was what caused the Mourning.

Frankly, I kinda like the idea that the Mourning’s cause was something incredibly mundane and easily preventable: Someone in a Cannith R&D lab forgot to properly close a valve or an Orien Teamster forgot to properly secure a package, and meanwhile all these 12D chess masters in the Dreaming Dark, Chamber, and Lords of Dust are just incapable of accepting that the Mourning happened because Jack took an early smoke break.

I like the idea that it was some kind patron deal, with the population of Cyre being collateral. Someone important went back on the deal, and someone came to collect.

Loved this one. The Mourning is the greatest mystery in modern Eberron, and I really enjoyed your take on it.

Your content is very interesting & you provide solid info but the rising inflection is killin' me!

It was a Cyran defensive weapom gone wrong. As it traced the current borders of Cyre, it was likely intended to magically shield Cyre from external attack. It was either; 1; poorly researched and released believing it was ready when it wasn't, 2; released as scheduled and planned but sabotaged by an outside agency, or, 3; triggered accidentally before it was ready.

Eberron is such an underrated setting. Frankly, WotC having control of it feels sad. It's so underutilized.

This is everything I wanted for lore. Really delving into a world that doesn't get enough world love

Four theories and no definitive answers, just as KB intended. I like to think 5. The Quori did it.

I know Keith wanted The Mourning to be vague so anyone can make up what they think happened at their table and make it their own canon. I believe he has his own canon ending but doesn't tell anyone? What I did was I ran Tomb of Annihilation as a lead up to The Mourning. It was Rogue One in Eberron. The point of it was the nations knew something was being made and sent the players to Xen'drik to investigate, leading to them finding out it was a bomb being made by some evil group (I think I used Vol at the time so I can have The Emerald Claw as goons) using Giant technology. They would of been too late as it slipped away, but not before making it out with the plans to build a new one.
