I am 7 years into automotive. Started when I was 17. I’m burnt out but couldn’t imagine doing anything else. I’m a Toyota dealership technician and the job itself is good and I like all of my coworkers. The first place I worked there was no dispatcher it was the service advisors would go down the line and hand out jobs they wrote. That shop still does that same thing. The dealership I work at now has a great dispatcher. But they moved a manager to service from sales a few years ago and she knows nothing about cars and whenever there’s a small hang up or issue she calls the big boss and tells him to come over because it’s an emergency. And not to mention a few of the bosses are in a relationship so that only makes things worse. Other than that it’s great though. I just wish that when times are slow especially during the winter that we had a hours guarantee for flat rate. I love the career it’s just after a few years it really burns you out mentally and physically. I’m one that I’m there open to close and sometimes past closing if need be because I want money. Most of the former techs I know are glad they left and most of them haven’t been in it since the 90s so even back then the industry must of been bad or failing then too. I also hate how everything now is run by a computer I’m used to mechanical systems and I struggle with all this computerized stuff because I grew up working on old stuff. I just don’t want to work at any chain or independent shops because for one thing my dealership has air conditioning in the shop but also because I get treated well here and paid decently.

How to start making money around cars... I just turned 18, host with 4rental cars and daily 3cars, and I NEED an actual full-time job to survive, Im far away from an actual mechanic, but I do have some experience with stuff like basic maintenance, suspension, really basic electric diag, a little bit of tuning. I can do a custom stage 1 tune with most NA cars, but never worked with Turbos, etc... So should I start as an apprentice and get my ASE on the way, or try as a sales (I just got rejected from Carmax as sales). ANY ADVICE HELPS, TYSM!

I feel for you and I've done that "like and subscribe" ritual, but that sloppy job assembling the transmission is not something that you should put on public view. Even AI-generated picture of the engine is better in thos context.

Cars are way better as a hobby than a career.

The whole automotive industry sucks, after 30 years in 3 different Ford dealerships I can’t take it anymore. Between ridiculous customers and Ford who is now worse than dealing with an insurance company I am ready to get out and never look back.

I am 53 years old and have 30 years in the business, management, service advisor, but mostly as a tech. I have finally found a great place to work. Not really much room for growth, but steady work, steady pay, and a fantastic atmosphere. This is an independent shop, the 3 years before it were in a corporate shop. The first year and a half were great, but then the COO changed and so did the environment. They made it essential to advance, but then impossible to do what is necessary to advance. The moral of the story is this, interview your potential employer as much as they are interviewing you.
