My favorite story about this movie is that supposedly, Mel Brooks was told "too bad you can't make movies like that anymore." And his reply was "well we couldn't make it back then, but we did anyway!"

FUN FACT: Mel Brooks wanted to cast Richard Pryor in Blazing Saddles as the main star, but Warner Bros. refused, so Brooks had Richard Pryor to co-wrote Blazing Saddles.

To understand why Mel Brooks made BLAZING SADDLES you have to know something about Mel Brooks's background. Mel Brooks was a combat engineer during WW2. He witnessed the liberation of the concentration camps. He was horrified by the hatred it took to do such horrible things to people. He decided that the best way to fight such hatred was with comedy. The movie makes fun of bigotry.

I think y'all are missing the point - in the '70s we had Redd Foxx/Fred Sanford, Archie Bunker, Don Rickles, etc. We had just come out of the riots of the '60s and many of us were all trying to defuse each other and get along by laughing at ourselves. A lot of us were getting along but there will always be those that just aren't ready to see both sides. No matter where we are, what we look like, what we think there will always be those that would rather fight and argue rather than recognize our differences and just get along. That's what this movie and all of its silliness is about - poking fun at all of it.
