Some awesome comments in here I had no idea Richard Pryor was apart of this movie but now it definitely makes sense this was so funny and showed how dumb racism really is ππ

This was Mel Brooks giant middle finger to everyone who hates other people for no reason. He was a genius.

Lily von Shtupp was played by the incomparable Madeline Kahn. She was a very talented comedian and actually a very gifted singer. She was in a few Mel Brooks movies and she always delivered. I think you guys would really enjoy Young Frankenstein (another Mel Brooks film starring Gene Wilder and Madeline Kahn).

A few explanations in case someone else didn't get to them: The "Yes/No" on the bull's rear end refers to signs on trucks (which you can still see today) indicating which side it was safe to pass the truck on (because they made very wide right turns, and if you tried to pass on the right at the wrong time you'd hit it). Gabby Johnson, the incomprehensible mountain man, was a parody of actor Gabby Hayes and his usual role in Western films. Lili von Schtupp is a parody of Marlene Dietrich (and "schtupp" is Yiddish for "f*ck", which is why her name gets censored in broadcasts of the film). The bit about not wanting the irish is because the irish were just as unwelcome in mid-19th century USA as the other minority groups. No, Harvey Korman sadly didn't get an Oscar for his performance in the role of Hedley Lamarr.

During the making of this, it was Richard Pryor who convinced Mel Brooks that they couldn't dial back the language to spare people's sensibilities. The bad guys had to go full bore racist to look like the correct degree of idiot. Later, the studios wanted the language toned down and Mel went to the mat with them, refusing to cut anything. In a more recent interview, the interviewer pointed out to Brooks that he'd never be able to make such a movie today. Mel replied, "We couldn't make it back then!" If you want more of Mel Brooks and Gene Wilder, try Young Frankensrein. Thanks for giving this one a chance!

In case no one else mentioned it yet, the recurring βHedley, not Hedyβ Lamarr gag is a reference to Hedy Lamarr, an actress and inventor. She was pretty amazing and well worth learning more about!

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hedy_Lamarr

Lilly Von Schtup (played by Madeline Khan) was inspired by the classic age actress Marlena Dietrich. It's a brilliant comedic take on the actress! Madeline is perfection in this role!

Cleavon Little the guy who played the sheriff is under appreciated these days. He won a Tony and an Emmy and showed up on every major 1970-80s show: Love Boat, Fantasy Island, MOD Squad, Rockford files. Unfortunately he died of cancer when he was 53, but he does have a star on Hollywood Boulevard

The white racist parts were written by the late Richard Pryor a comedy genius imo. Mel Brooks played the Governor and Chief Indian.

14:36 "I have never heard any Indian language." You still haven't. That was director Mel Brooks as the Chief, speaking Yiddish.
Brooks also played the GOV. (and a brief cameo in the line of bad-guys)
The meta humor of acknowledging they were all in a movie was a big part of Brooks' humor; it showed up in quite a few of his films.

Hi guys. Okay here is some info on this. First, Mel Brooks played the governor. He wrote most of the lines that made fun of the white people, and brought on a cowriter who wrote most of the lines that made fun of the black people. That cowriter was Richard Pryor. 2 comedy geniuses. The part at the end where they ended up in Hollywood was just to remind people that this was just a movie and was intended to elicit laughs and maybe a little thought. The guy who played Mongo was Alex Karras who was a hall of fame defensive tackle for the Detroit Lions and then became an actor. He also played the dad in the TV series Webster years ago. He and his real life wife actress Susan Clark played the adoptive parents of the title character played by Emanuel Lewis. So many smart and funny and talented people involved in this movie. Comedy was so much more open back then. Of course we didn't have people whose job it was to sit around staring at a screen all day looking for things to get offended by. Cleavon Little (sheriff) did a great job with this part as well. You guys are a bit too young to pick up on some of the references and to recognize some of the talented actors who were a part of this movie. Everybody wanted to be part of a Mel Brooks film. Stay safe and well you guys.
