The movie is only stupid on the surface. It's incredibly smart. It's one of the great satires of movie history.

The writers didn't put RDJ in blackface just to be purely controversial. It's a satirical role where they have the character go to ridiculous lengths to poke fun at Kirk Lazarus. RDJ's character is making fun of the ridiculous lengths that extreme Method actors go to to become a character, inhabiting the character's skin 24/7.

RDJr was not making fun of black people. He was making fun of the type of actor that would accept a role like that and try his hardest to play the best black man he (thinks) he could.
